Girls' bathroom- Thursday afternoon

So. This was still. going. on.

Call Maddie naive, but she'd thought that letting a de-aged trickster god swipe her V-card might have alleviated some of the, um, problems she was having. Apparently not! Apparently she was stuck with this feeling till it went away for everyone and that was stupid. God.

This wasn't even her first cold (okay, very cool) shower of the day, and while she knew it was probably killing the environment, it made her feel better at least for a little while. Not dirty, by the way, amazingly.

. . . sigh, Stephanie had to do that work for her boss sometime, right? Loath as she was to break away from more, ahem, pleasant activities, she did still have a healthy fear of Bruce's Disapproving Face and so a cold shower (or maybe ten, whatever) was inevitably a thing that had to happen.

"Ohmygod this thing can end already," she griped loudly enough over the sound of running water in case anyone could hear and commiserate.

Oh god please don't let them commiserate TOO MUCH.

And when Maddie heard that, a horrible thought entered her head. "It is going to end, right?"

"At the risk of my jinxing it, it usually does," Stephanie assured her. "I'm currently working on a hypothesis that it has to, because the island has way too much fun screwing with us -- oh god bad word choice, bad word choice -- to deprive itself of that by making us all die of exhaustion. Or frustration. Or both."

"...Not a bad way to go," Maddie said, and shook her head. "Forget I said that, forget I said that..."

Several loud, echoing thud noises came from Stephanie's shower stall.

"Oh, believe me, I've been trying to forget I've thought that more than a few times so far this week, myself."

"I mean, at least we're not alone so it's less embarrassing?"

She said, from the cold water of the girls' showers...

Relatively speaking, this was so not a thing to be ashamed of.

"I do keep trying to remind myself of all the ways, on this overly-inquisitive-and-curiously-literate-squirrel inhabited island of wackiness and fun, that it could be so much worse."

Beat.

"And, at least for me, probably has been on more than one occasion."

"Are there bad, unsexy things that happen?" Maddie asked hopefully.

Long, long pause.

"In general, or on weeks like this? Because this week that would depend entirely on how catastrophic breaking of things mid . . . entertainment affects your opinion of the situation . . ."

Another muffled thud.

"Oh, god, I'm not helping."

"Um. Not helping, no," Maddie agreed. And there was a pause as she just ducked her head under the water. "Have I mentioned I hate this week?"

"You might have alluded to it, but you haven't quite scr--"

Stephanie sighed really loudly.

"I have gotten into more trouble with my mou--"

Another thud.

"In other words, right there with you."

Maddie reached for the shower, uh, knobs. "Let's see how cold this can go before there's screaming. I mean."

"Wouldn't that be a good sign, though, just in the opposite way?" asked Stephanie, then let out a strangled sort of squeak. "THAT WAS NOT MY HEAD VOICE I AM SO SORRY."

"Why does everything sound wrong?" Maddie complained.

"Because whoever invented the English language is evil," Stephanie deadpanned. "It's a constant stream of not-going-there-not-going-there-nope-nope-nope, oh, whoops, I'm there in my head this week. It's kind of exhausting."

She trailed off before adding, in a choked voice that sounded like she'd been struggling not to say something and failed at that:

"And not in a fun way -- I give up. I swear."

"I think giving up on this one till this over is the only way," Maddie sighed. "This is out lives now. Full of accidental innuendo."

"Except for when it's on purpose." In her shower stall, Stephanie slouched against the wall and rubbed a hand over her face. (HER FACE, PEOPLE. DON'T BE GROSS.)

"And I have no idea which is worse."

"When it's on purpose and you don't want to mean it," Maddie said, pretty much immediately.

"Oooooh." Stephanie sounded more sympathetic now, even if the agitated edge was still in her voice. "Yeah, that's never any fun. I hate that the most about these weeks."

Not that it was a problem for her, personally, very much, but still.

"I mean, don't get me wrong," Maddie said, "it's not anything bad, or anything. It just leads to decisions that are maybe not great."

Like Maddie ever made good decisions to begin with.

Pfffff, people who made consistently good decisions and had their lives together were boring anyway, or so Stephanie (who fell under neither of those categories) would say.

"A thing I am also familiar with," she replied, "though that's not so much this week as . . . well, most of the time. If that makes you feel any better."

Sure, Steph, have this conversation in the dorm bathroom with someone you'd never properly met.

Actually, she would do that, and it wouldn't have a thing to do with pollen.

"It kinda does," she admitted. "I feel like I could high five you, but..."

Naked, shower, sex pollen, pruny hands, you know how it goes.

You could get several different recipes for badness out of that combination.

"It's the thought that counts, let's just leave it at that," Stephanie suggested. "Like a high-five in principle. Sound good?"

"Consider yourself principle-fived," Maddie agreed.

Wow, that still sounded wrong.

Petra was just splashing her face with water, because showering with other people around was ahahahahahahaahahahahaha NO.

"This is ridiculous," she whined at her reflection in the mirror.

"Tell me about it," Maddie grumbled from where she was never leaving the shower again. The stupid decisions would have to come to her here.

"This happened before, you know," Petra told whoever was in the shower. "I thought it was my meds but turned out no, it was everybody."

"Yeah, I heard," she said, but it was the second part that got her. "Meds can do this to people?"

That was just mean.

"I'm on hormone treatments," Petra explained before bending to splash her face again. "So if you really screw it up, probably?"

"I'm glad you didn't do that," Maddie said slowly. "Like hormone treatment hormone treatments?"

She could guess what that meant, but she'd never met anyone who'd been on them.

"I think we're running out of cold water," Jessica announced from the sinks. Because she wasn't really planning on being unclothed while other people were also unclothed. But she still needed to splash water on her face a whole lot.

"Can we run out of cold water?" Maddie called from where she still wasn't moving.

Mostly because people kept coming in and she wasn't leaving when other people were waiting to get unclothed.

"Probably not," Jessica said. "I mean, normally we couldn't, especially living on an island. But Fandom being Fandom, it might be less of a joke than I meant it to be."

"If we run out of cold water, I think a lot of people are going to quit everything," Maddie stated, just for the record.

"If we run out of cold water, do me a favor and give me a head's up? Because people will try to murder me for jinxing it," Jessica said. "And then they'll quit everything."

"If we run out of cold water, you'll hear me swearing," Maddie assured her. "Then you can start running."

"Thanks. You're a good friend," Jessica said. "And hopefully an even better early warning system."

"Hopefully we don't need a warning for anything," Maddie said. "Seriously, this is the only way I'm coping."

She was going to be one giant prune, and that attractive mental image should keep her not having sex for at least a day.

"I've found that having some moderate embarrassment and awkwardness can help," Jessica said. "I mean, I wouldn't rely on that exclusively, but use it if you've suffered from it."

It did, thus the long pause before Stephanie said slowly, "I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt there, and assuming that was meant to be a hundred and ten percent innuendo-free."

"That's how I live my life on a regular basis," Maddie admitted. "Not sure it'll work here."

"A little too desensitized?" Jessica asked. "Tough break."

She was nodding, though that might be kind of hard to see since, you know, shower. "Thus, cold water. All of it, maybe."

"I'll tell you what. My next shower will be warm. I'll survive. You, meanwhile, can go ahead and use some more cold water," Jessica offered.

"Thanks for taking one for the team," Maddie said, hoping that didn't sound as bad as it did in her head.

"Any time," Jessica said, splashing her face one more time. "Let's just hope I survive the experience."

"Like hormone treatments hormone treatments," Petra confirmed. "Ugh. I'm going to have to do my makeup all over again." This week sucked.

"We are not allowed to run out of cold water," Petra declared. "I am the student council president and I said so."

"Go, you," Maddie said. "And don't worry, I'm sure everyone's going to think you're super pretty without makeup anyway."

She was saying that from where she couldn't actually see, because she didn't need to be seeing how super pretty anyone was like ever again.
