3rd Floor Common Room, Sunday Night

After a pizza run and whatever mother-daughter bonding was possible when the two were barely 18 months apart in age, Francesca and Bay were back in the dorms and watching The Amazing Race.

"So which would be worse?" Bay said/signed. "Stuck in Vietnam with no money like that couple, or having to go around the world in matching glittery sweatsuits like the sisters?"

Francesca wrinkled her nose. "Broke in Vietnam," she decided. "Less embarrassing."

Feeling a bit bored since Jessica had been keeping her on a tight leash today, Rachel finally made a break for it and escaped to the third floor common room. And there were people here!

"Hi. What're we watching?" she asked, inviting herself to he viewing party.

Everyone was being really loud this weekend, while Gert just wanted to ignore all the chaos, so for... some reason, she decided that the common room would be the place to go.

"Hey, Bay," she greeted her friend, flopping on the couch. "Hey... Bay's kid?"

She'd heard the annoying guy on the radio, and Gert was pretty sure she would have recognized hair like that if she'd ever seen Francesca around before.

"Idiots getting lost," Bay answered. "Amazing Race. Whose kid are you?"

The TV in the common room was also really loud: Francesca liked it that way, and Bay had learned to tolerate hard-of-hearing preferences.

"Hi," Francesca said, smiling over. "I'm Francesca Bledsoe. Cool hair."

"Do you promise not to take me back to them right away if I tell you?" Rachel asked. "I'm not running away or anything, I promise."

Bay looked the girl over. "You look old enough to handle the awesome responsibility of watching TV without mom and dad," she decided. "So I promise. But fair warning -- if you bug me, I'll take you back."

"Yours too," Gert said sincerely. "Red was my second choice when I first dyed it. I still might do it one day."

Bledsoe... she didn't think she knew that name. "Does your other parent go here too?"

"You can't take me back if you don't know where to take me to," Rachel reasoned.

"The sweatsuits are an affront to all things cute. I'd go for that," Emily said as she strolled by. So, kids everywhere, but none her own. She could deal with this. Maybe even poke some fun.

Jim had no kids (thank goodness) but that wasn't going to stop him from venturing out. Maybe he wanted to snicker at people who did have kids and maybe he wanted to see what the spawn of some of his friends was like.

So, common room and hey, a common room with a very familiar face. And some unfamiliar faces.

"Got a tiny you this weekend, I see."

"It would look good on you," Francesca told her, already shaking her head in response to the other question. "Nah, he went to a school for deaf kids. This place would make him crazy."

Too many hearing people, too much mumbling.

"... your logic has foiled me, tiny person," Bay granted. "Okay. No taking you back, period."

"Yo," Gert greeted Jim, leaning over the couch in his direction. "Long time no see. Also child-free this weekend, I'm guessing?"

"That's good enough for me," Rachel said. "I'm Rachel. Do you know Cade or Jessica?"

"Thanks for agreeing with me," Francesca said, turning so she could follow Emily's lips a bit better. "I would look way better if I was going to be on TV."

And it hadn't been as long for Jim seeing Gert but it had been a different Gert so he kept that to himself.

"No kids for me. Good thing too. I'd have fed them too much to make them sleep because I'm not a dad. Not happening."

"Appearances aren't all...but they sure as hell are something," Emily said with a shrug. "I'm Emily, nice to meet you."

"Don't you recognize our little girl?" Bay asked, just to mess with him. "I think she has your smile."

Bay coughed on nothing. "Yeah. Yeah. They're both ... really nice people."

She wasn't allowed to break a little girl by saying she'd just made out with her dad, right?

To change the topic, she gestured to the girl on the couch next to her. "This is Francesca, who is mine, and I'm Bay."

Well, that stopped Jim solid for a moment or two. His eyes widened and then he shook his head.

"No way," he finally said. "You would have come and found me before now. If she was mine, there's no way you would have left me out of all the fun you've been having, I'm sure."

"Same," Francesca told her. "It's weird to see Mom this age. Did you have any visitors like me?"

"Yeah, sorry I can't really sign," Gert said apologetically, since she'd noticed Francesca and Bay signing at each other when she walked in. "I kind of know about Bay's switched-at-birth thing and Daphne and everything. Is she how your mom and dad met?"

Belatedly, she touched her hair, considering. "And thanks," she added. "Maybe the next time I have to touch it up."

"I don't mind kids, but I don't think I'd want to be responsible for one for however long this is gonna last," Gert agreed. "I thought the reward for being responsible and not getting pregnant in high school is not having to deal with that."

"Right," Bay admitted. "But it was fun to see the look on your face. Anyhow, this is Francesca. Her dad's my ex."

Her epic love story ex. Not one of the others.

"You didn't get anybody?"

"Guess this is what we get for going to such a special school," Jim said dryly. "I'll just get a dog if I'm that hard up for company. Or I'll bug Jackson."

Jim thought about it. "No, I'll get a dog. Jackson's a douche. How's it been with you?"
