5th Floor Common Room, Sunday Morning

Yeah.

When Flick had been woken up with noise at his window, he'd gotten stupidly excited that Jude had finally found him. But no. Nope. It'd been just a pelting rain hitting the window and beyond that rain? Sharks. There were sharks flying around out there and Flick was just about done with this place and its eccentricities.

There was no freaking way he was going outside to investigate further. He wasn't one of those stupid people in horror movies who heard a noise and went closer and inevitably ended up getting sawed in half in a spray of blood. Nope, he was going to take his crappy mood and he was going to go to the common room where he could turn on the television and see if the weather was reporting on this.

They weren't, of course, but it made Flick feel better when he imagined the dumb meteorologists trying to forecast a funnel cloud of sharks. They'd probably wet themselves and run away. And then who would the world have to wrongly report the weather?

He missed Jude. What a freaking loser he was.

[Open. Flick's not going to be getting near those sharks, man.]

Yeah, Gert wasn't going outside either. Old Lace could just live without knowing what shark meat tasted like, because hell no.

"I didn't know people actually watched the weather on TV anymore," she noted, peering at the TV to see what Flick was watching.

"Thought I'd see if today's absolutely fantastic weather made the national news."

Because, in any other place, it would. In this place? Nope. This place was invisible to almost everyone it seemed.

"Wanted to a weatherman piss himself."

"That'd be kind of hilarious," Gert granted. "But no way would the outside world acknowledge that this place exists. Broadcasting how weird it is here on TV would lose the station a ton of ad money for being full of crazy people."

"Huh. And here I thought it'd make them money since people in this world love to watch crazies and laugh at them," Flick said, twirling the remote control around in one hand.

"Makes them feel less crazy."

"I think people mostly like that when the crazies aren't supposed to be authorities on anything," Gert countered. "Just random rich people to be judged and criticized. But if our weathermen are crazy, then we as a society have dissolved into shambles."

She rolled her eyes. Oh, American entertainment.

"...you consider weathermen authority figures?" Flick asked, sounding dubious. "They can't get the freaking weather right half the time. I could be a weatherman. Look outside, see what's going on, tell the masses of people and collect a paycheck. Done."

Nope. Nope nope nope.

"What the ever-loving fuck?" Kathy snapped, glaring out the window as if the sharks were falling out purely to spite her. She wasn't usually one for profanity, but there was a shark-cyclone out there. If that wasn't cause for profanity, then what was?

"I am so done with this place."

See, Flick? Your roomie agreed with you.

"I was kind of hoping to hear someone on TV try to talk about this while keeping that smarmy anchorman voice," Kathy admitted. "And now, we have reports of sharks raining from the skies, right off the coast of Baltimore..." she said, mimicking the unctuous tones of the guys on the TV.

"You and me both," Flick said, glancing over at Kathy and nodding. There weren't supposed to be sharks falling out of the sky. That happened in movies. And this sure as hell wasn't a movie.

"Feels like I'm on some freaking acid trip," he added though he'd never actually done acid. He guessed this might be what it felt like. "This place is insane."

Understatement.

"So, last weekend it was creepy girls running around and making everyone act like lunatics," Kathy said, once more grateful that she'd been immune or skipped over or whatever had kept her from being messed with. "This weekend, it's sharks falling from the sky."

There was a wet crunch from outside. Kathy wasn't even going to look.

"How are they ever breathing enough to--you know what? Never mind. I'm not even asking. Applying science to this is just going to make me want to drink and it's still only in the early afternoon."

"And drinking's gonna make you think you're invincible which means you'll go outside and I'll probably lose a roommate."

He'd seen the effects drinking. Felt them too. No need for anyone to go outside and end up in pieces because they had a little too much alcohol and thought it'd fun.

"Nothing on the weather forecast about this either," Flick said, nodding towards the television. "Apparently, it's gonna be partly sunny. Think I should call this station up and tell them what's really happening?"

He would. Just for laughs.

"But then you'd have a single!" Kathy teased, before doing the stupid thing and looking out the window again. There was a shark shimmying across the lawn. Kathy hated everything. "But you don't have to worry. I'd have to leave the dorms to go get something to drink and there's no way I'm doing that sober."

Because bars were the only place to get alcohol from, right? No one could possibly keep any in their rooms!

Seriously, Kathy had no idea. She'd never been drunk, or even tipsy, in her entire life. Too much of a good girl for that. Which she wouldn't be mentioning. Aloud. To anyone ~~as if they couldn't figure it out for themselves just by talking to her~~.

"You'd have to include video footage, you know," she told Flick. "No one will believe you if you don't. Heck, no one will believe you even if you do, but at least they'll pause before scoffing."

"You think they'd send some men with straight jackets to this place?" Flick asked thoughtfully. "I might need a therapist but I don't wanna be forced into talking to one."

The rational side of Flick knew therapy would probably be a good idea. The other parts? Knew it wasn't going to happen. Ever.

"Assuming the guys with straight jackets don't get eaten by raining sharks as soon as they cross the causeway," Kathy sniffed. "Besides, what are the odds they'll make it all the way here? They'll probably use up all the straight jackets before they get through town!"

Sorry, other Fandomites. But Kathy didn't have much faith in your sanity.

"So, then I Might be safe with recording some video with my phone and sending it into some random television station," Flick said, getting up off the sofa and crossing towards the window.

The sharks were, yeah, still out there and still raining down. How there was no damage anywhere was amazing. "I might even get them to pay me for it. Capitalism."

"We're even really high up for a good view," Kathy offered. "Though you might wanna head down to the first and second floors to get some closeups."

From inside the building, obviously. Going outside was still a stupid idea, no matter how much money he might make.

Pulling his phone out of his pocket, Flick turned it on and got the video feature going. He held it up to the window, letting the footage of sharks just crisscrossing the sky fill up the screen.

"Closeups of sharks," he said, shaking his head and almost laughing. "Not something I thought I'd be doing today. Or ever. Even in my dreams."

"You've just summed up my entire experience at Fandom," Kathy said, snickering. "Though you missed the 'Not something I ever wanted to do' bit."

From the TV, Kathy heard, "We interrupt you to bring this special news bulletin!"

"I'm think someone's actually reporting that it's raining sharks!" Kathy yelped, turning the TV up. "Finally! Some recognition!"

The broadcast continued. "Just a little while longer until the new Mister What is revealed internationally."

"...Never mind."

"Mister What?" Flick repeated, looking back at the TV but keeping his phone up and recording. Maybe he'd send some of this footage to Jo --

Oh, he couldn't do that. She really didn't have a phone. Flick bit the inside of his cheek to keep himself from getting mired in that memory.

"I don't even know what that is."

"Does it even require going outside anymore?" Gert wondered. "They probably get the info online now."

Anyway.

"I'm just saying, in order for most people to appreciate crazy people being wrong, they have to be completely useless to us," she amended. "Like reality stars. Not people that perform an actual service."

"I think you underestimate people's ability to judge other people," Flick said, shrugging. "If it makes them look better, they'll think anyone's crazy. Tear someone else down, build themselves up."

He'd seen it happen enough.

"Huge British sci-fi show spanning decades?" Kathy asked, looking at her roommate like he was crazy. Not even for filming sharks! "See, the most recent guy just left and there are literally thousands of pounds riding on who the next one will be. I'm hoping for a woman or an actor of color, but--"

Kathy realized this was probably way more information than Flick had asked for. She was babbling about nerd stuff again. Ouch.

"Err, never mind. The news is reporting more stuff that isn't actually news. Got any good footage?"

There hadn't been a lot of television watching in Flick's youth. Too busy avoiding his father and recovering from failing at avoiding his father. Other things had been on his mind during the downtime.

"I've got sharks and rain," he said, shaking his head at that again. "Wouldn't be so exciting if the sharks weren't flying through the air so I got some backdrops of buildings so no one thinks I'm faking this crap."

"..do I wish to know?" Loki asked slowly. Because sharks.

"Thought this would be run of the mill for you now," Flick remarked with a small grin. "Sharks haven't flown around this place before?"

If even Loki was surprised, Flick was guessing this was something petty new and pretty strange.
