Fifth Floor Common Room, Monday evening

Jessica walked into the common room tonight with a gremlin in a pillowcase. It had been a surprisingly close call, but she managed not to get bit or anything. And, really, a pillow was a reasonable sacrifice to make to not get gremlin bit. But now she had a dilemma. A dilemma that could only be solved with kindergarten methods.

So that was why there was a gremlin in the corner of the common room with a makeshift hat that said "TIME OUT" facing the wall while Jessica ate a salad and watched Why Your Father Can't Tell a Brief Narrative. She wasn't expecting anything to be resolved even though the show was in its last season, but it was a good diversion to keep her from just staring at the gremlin during his hour of timeout.

"Season premiere of Why Your Father Can't Tell a Brief Narrative," Jessica said. "And I'm trying to eat healthier. And the gremlin's in time out. That should about cover it."

Raleigh nodded slowly because that was a lot to take in. "That show is seriously still on?" he went with.

It was the safe bet.

"As the title suggests, the father has trouble telling brief narratives," Jessica said.

"Pretty sure those kids don't care anymore."

"Unfortunately, their reactions were captured on film years ago, so they can't get out of it," Jessica said. "Poor fictional characters."

"There's no escape," Raleigh replied with a sad little sigh. He carefully moved around the gremlin to get to a couch.

"It's depressing, really," Jessica said. "Watch out for the gremlin. I'm not sure the biting has been shamed out of him yet."

"So those are real. That's... good to know." And horrible.

"This is your first time seeing one?" Jessica asked. "Well, don't worry. They're harmless as long as you have good reflexes and keep a reasonable minimum safe distance."

"Yeah." Raleigh was just going to sit on the back of the couch with his feet pulled up anyway.

"If it helps, you're sitting next to a girl who's been here for a year, seen plenty of gremlins, and never been bit," Jessica mentioned. "And this is actually a good place to be, because couch cushions can be great shields."

"Is this a class on gremlin avoidance in disguise?"

"It's more of an independent study on the topic," Jessica said.

"I'll stick to staying on the couch just in case then." It would only end in tears.

"You do that. And if it comes this way, I'll handle it," Jessica promised.
