The Roof ; Monday Afternoon

It was way too nice to stay inside. Way too nice. Will remembered this as being perfect running weather. Not too hot but not too cold. He wouldn't overheat or catch a chill and you could run for hours without feeling it. Will loved it which is why after he'd had his run, he wandered up to the roof and breathed in the fresh air.

Enjoying the scenery and the weather might have been a more literal interpretation of his dad's rule but it seemed to fit. He could recall a few times when he and his parents had camped out in dense forests with little to see but dirt, bark, and tree branches. His father though pointed out small things like patches of moss, four leaf clovers in the midst of overgrown weeds, and a small birds nest on one of the highest tree branches.

The thoughts made Will smile as he hopped up on the roof's ledge and sat down, swinging his legs. In the distance, he could see the town and maybe he every once in awhile, he tried to pull at one of the benches or light posts he could barely make out just to see if his abilities extended that far. He wasn't trying too hard but he could feel the pull, just that tugging about his mind, that maybe he was succeeding a bit.

"Oh god, that doesn't look very safe." Sure, Felicity had wandered up here exploring but she wasn't hanging off the ledge like a psycho.

"What?" Thankfully, Will didn't startle at the sudden voice so he didn't end up flailing and fumbling and making it look less safe than it was. "Oh, it's pretty safe."

Granted, it was a fairly long way down but he wasn't planning on jumping. "It's kind of nice, actually. "Like a Ferris wheel that doesn't move."

Terrible analogy there.

"I think I'm okay closer to the door," she said. "I can't believe people are allowed up here."

Will swung his legs around so they wouldn't be hanging off the ledge anymore, at least. It made it easier to see her. He smiled easily.

"It's nice though, isn't it?" he asked, settling his hands in his lap. "I promise, you're not in any danger if you wanna step out. The wind's not strong and I'm not gonna make you come closer to the ledge."

"Well thanks for that." Felicity took a few steps further out but was very pointedly not looking down. "Is this like a hangout or something?"

"It can be, yeah," Will told her, glancing around. "It's like a common room except it's outside. And six floors above the ground. But yeah, some people come up here to smoke and others come up here to just enjoy the fresh air."

Which is what he was doing.

"Afraid of heights?"

"No, no," she said. "I am, however, afraid of breaking my neck."

Smiling, Will hopped off the ledge and walked closer to her.

"As far as I know, no one's broken their neck by hanging out on the roof," he told her reassuringly. "And I wouldn't let you break your neck while I'm up here. I'm Will. Hi."

"Felicity," she said. "Hi. New student, which I guess is obvious."

"Couldn't tell," Will joked, smirking. "But, I was in your shoes a few months back. The new person shine does go away and you'll be telling stories about your weird experiences in no time. How'd you end up here?"

"I was looking for a school outside of my current hometown and my old hometown 'cause the school systems there aren't great." And she hopes of going to MIT, thank you. "The brochure for this place ended up in my mailbox."

"Doesn't surprise me anymore that a brochure would just pop up like that," Will remarked with a shake of his head. "This place is strange. What do you think? Does the actual place match what the brochure promised?"

Cosette had a habit of exploring the preserve in her free time (and acting out little imaginary adventures by herself, but nobody had to know that), and normally that was what she'd be doing on a day like this, but she felt like ranging up instead of out for a little while.

"It's pretty from up here, isn't it?" she asked, coming over to lean against the ledge.

"All that and more," Felicity said. "They seem to skip over the superpowered, alien parts in the advertising."

"Yeah, they skip over a lot of stuff," Will laughed. "Least you got a brochure though. I didn't even get that. I got punted here really suddenly. For my own protection."

"I think so," Will replied, glancing over. "You can almost see the entire island from up here. Looks even smaller than it is."

"Well this place isn't all that dangerous," she said. "I think."

Will couldn't really bring himself to tell her that it could be pretty dangerous. He wasn't in the mood to freak anyone out today.

"Nah, I think the worst thing we have to deal with is the stairs," he joked. "Seen all those stairs in town? The roof is light years better than that."

"The roof has a bigger drop than the stairs," she said. "If I fall down the stairs hopefully I'll be able to grab something to stop myself."

"You're only gonna fall off the roof if you start treating the ledge like a tight rope," Will pointed out. "And you seem pretty against that so I think you're safe. You can fall down the steps just by walking normally."

"Even more so once you get a good look and see just how much water surrounds it," agreed Cosette. She slipped out of her shoes, set them aside, and proceeded to climb up onto the ledge. "And that's even before you look toward the mainland."

"Maybe if you're clumsy," she said, smirking. "I can manage stairs just fine."

"It's a nice view though," Will mentioned, gesturing behind him. "You sure you wanna miss that? I promise you won't fall."

"It's really just a dot," Will said, nodding. "Wonder if it even shows up on a map. Wouldn't be surprised if a map just showed all water and no trace of this place. Like a hidden oasis or something."

"How can you promise that?" she asked.
