Fourth Floor Common Room, Sunday Afternoon

This morning, everyone in the school got a last-minute email announcing Joker's birthday party, and there were flyers posted in a few places throughout the dorms. Both strictly insisted "no presents, please".

The fourth floor common room had been done up party-style, with streamers, balloons, the whole works.

The TV was playing a bad movie marathon, and there were snacks, drinks, and pizza laid out. Joker himself was lounging on the couch, eating pizza, and watching the TV. Underneath a large banner hanging from the ceiling that said "HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!"

He didn't want to make a big deal out of it, after all.

Joker his holding court on the couch. Say hi! Try not to block his view of the TV.

Totally moddable snacks and drinks. For pizza, you've got plain, pepperoni, Hawaiian, and veggie.

It's a less eclectic list than you'd expect, designed to appeal to a more general audience. ~~Meta for~~ Ernest Goes To Jail, Howard the Duck, the live-action Masters of the Universe movie... and, of course, Plan 9 from Outer Space.

But you have to sing first. No singing, no cake. Those are the rules.

You want to start up a game of I never? Play Monopoly? Do a line dance in Joker's honor? Just hang out and talk to each other, without him? Yeah, that's cool. Rock on with your bad selves. Post your own OCD here.

Eleanor didn't so much "arrive" as she'd been there helping him to set up. But she did take a few minutes before everyone arrived to double check that the room looked all right.

Damn you, you horrible, horrible persons for bringing Joker stuff. Go on, set them on the table with the others.

Where Eleanor was spending most of the party was here, on the couch next to Joker.

"Is it bad that I didn't throw your party?" she asked, for possibly the hundredth time. "I would have, if you wanted."

Never mind that she didn't know how to throw parties.

YAY Last-minute party!!! WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

"And you'd've stressed, and made a big deal out of it, and worried about how it came out. Nah, Babe, don't worry. I got this. See? Party." Joker shrugged, and gave her a grin. "Besides, you helped set up. What more could a guy ask?"

Cecil showed up, Foucault in tow, grinning hugely. "Happy birthday!"

"I didn't bring any presents, because you said not to," Cecil said. "But I did bring a disc with a bunch of movies burned in! ♥Carlos♥ said if you like weird things, you'd love these. I'm not sure why - I mean, they're mostly local documentaries and things, a couple public access movies - but maybe just because they're twenty-first century quaint." From Night Vale.

He handed Joker the disc. "So it's really educational, and not a present at all!"

Jalian had no idea what a birthday party was. Well, she'd learned enough of the culture to learn that the person had apparently been born on this day in the calendar and was celebrating it, but she had no idea what that celebration entailed. So she showed up mostly out of curiosity.

"Movies from Night Vale???" Joker asked, staring at the disc. He couldn't possibly imagine the mind-numbing horrors that lurked within, or the strange and twisted worldview the movie makers would call normal. "Holy shit, that's the best present ever!!! You ROCK!"

"I can think of a few things," Eleanor said, coyly. "But they're not conducive to demonstrating in front of other people."

Look who was actually getting the hang of flirting!

Joker waved at her from the couch. "Hey, Jalian! Good to see you! Come in, sit down, hang out! One of our strange local customs here is that you're required to have a good time."

Joker grinned at her. "Well, I won't be here all evening. It'll still be my birthday after the party's over."

The fact that she'd had to get the hang of flirting just meant that now that she was doing it, it was even more delicious.

Cecil blinked at the enthusiasm, but hey - he was always happy when someone else agreed that his hometown was awesome! "Yay! I'm glad you like it. So how has your birthday been so far?"

Jalian nodded to him and looked around as she came further in. "Congratulations on living another year." That was the appropriate thing to say, wasn't it? "What sort of good time is expected?" No, she wasn't buying "required", Joker, sorry. She'd do her best anyway.

Eleanor was no good at shopping for presents. So what she'd done, instead, was to make a mix CD (http://nobloodymessiah.livejournal.com/6910.html) full of songs that she thought maybe he might like.

Some of the songs had flying themes, yes. She knew her audience.

She hadn't bothered decorating the actual disc, beyond writing JOKER MIX ♥ on it in black Sharpie.

Maybe she'd convince him that not all modern music was awful. Worth a try.

"Oh, so you are expecting a present, then," she laughed. "It said on the invitation that you weren't. Scandalous lies."

"It's been pretty good for me," Joker answered with a grin. "Hangin' out, having fun. How's my birthday been so far for you?"

"The kind where you actually have fun, instead of staring at everyone like we've got two heads. Can you manage that? Do those pretty lips of yours ever smile?" He gestured around the room. "We've got pizza, bad movies, and conversation. How can you go wrong with that?"

"I am. I'm a scandalous liar. You do have a present for me, right? You can always improvise."
