Fifth Floor Common Room, Tuesday Morning

After the picnic on Saturday and a rather eventful night in Baltimore last night (it was so good to be back next to a real city again), Roscoe needed to veg out today.

Obviously that meant pop music, a milkshake from Mooby Land, and painting his nails in the common room. Why, what did a hangover mean for you?

He had a whole wicker basket full of different nail polish colors, because he was expecting that people might come in and join him and he was more than willing to share. His nails were getting painted a sparkly pink color, and he was starting with his right hand because things could only improve once he got around to the left.

Having no classes, Negasonic took to wandering the dorm looking for something to do. Spying Roscoe when she hit the fifth floor, she decided she could risk some social interaction.

"Hey."

She flopped down on the couch.

"Sup?"

Hey, for Negasonic that's almost friendly.

"Hey!" Roscoe said, perking up. He carefully finished his work on his pinky nail before looking up at her. "Just burning off a hangover with nail polish fumes, because I totally thought this through," he said easily. "How's it going?"

She shrugged. "Okay, I guess. It's weird having days without classes."

Because, you know. That's what's weird about Fandom.

Hey, if she was taking the weirder stuff in stride, Roscoe wasn't going to go trying to traumatize her.

"It really is, right? I kind of thought the workload would get more intense after the summer, but nope."

Roscoe shrugged one shoulder. "What classes are you taking, anyway?"

"Firsthand history, Debate and whatever batshit thing Deadpool calls a class," she said rolling her eyes at the last one. "I've only had one so far. What about you?"

"So you're going hard with the actual academic classes," Roscoe observed. "Interesting choice." He grinned. "I kinda went the other way with it. Driver's ed and the Deadpool class. I haven't taken anything with him yet, but I've heard it should be interesting."

"Interesting is an understatement," Negasonic said with a snort of amusement. "He's not what I'd call a ringing definition of sanity."

"Yeah, I believe it," Roscoe said. "He used to do these radio broadcasts about stuff that happened in town. They were pretty weird. Lots of creative nicknames for people."

He paused and remembered that it was Negasonic's first week here. "Wait, do you know him?"

Hey, there was music drifting in from the upstairs. And Dante was bored.

So he popped his head into the common room after a moment or two of consideration. "Hey, Roscoe," he called. "What's up?"

"Yeeeah. My mentor back home has a hard-on for turning him into a hero of some kind," she said shaking her head. "But I doubt that's ever going to happen."

"...Well, he's got the outfit for it," Roscoe said after a long moment of digesting... all of that. Deadpool as a hero, Negasonic Teenage Warhead having a 'mentor,' the two of them knowing each other from back home, all of it. "Dude, no wonder you're totally cool with Fandom. Is your mentor like a superhero too?"

"Hey, man," Roscoe called back, just as he was finishing up his work on his last fingernail. "You never told me Baltimore has such a good bar scene. I went out last night and I'm still recovering."

Well, for a definition of 'such a good bar scene' that meant 'as compared to cartoon towns.'

"Kind of. He's a mutant like me," she said finally sitting up and idly poking through the pile of nail polish. "But we don't run around in capes or anything like that."

They're totally grounded in reality.

"You never asked," Dante said, stalking into the room. He picked a place on the couch and collapsed on it. "'Cause I know a few places. Especially ones that don't card too good."

From Negasonic's corner of the couch she gave Dante a nod of acknowledgement along with a "Hey" of greeting.

"Negasonic," Dante greeted back, mostly just because he liked saying it. "Settling in?"

"So I took this class in my first semester where we made these really high-quality fake IDs," Roscoe said. "So I'm not even scared of getting carded. I showed up to these places all fearless and shit, and then like drinks later I had to figure out the way back to the causeway. It was an adventure."

But not a bad one, apparently.

"Next time you gotta come with," he added. "Or we can get cracking on making that list of parties to portal to."

"That's so cool," Roscoe said brightly. "I knew your name had to be a code name for something. How'd you pick it?"

He fished a sparkly green polish out of the basket and offered it out to her while he was talking. It seemed like a good color for her.

"Only had one class so far," she said with shrug. "I was telling Roscoe it's weird to only have three classes and the rest of it being free time. Weird."

"You get the list I sent you last week?" Dante asked, tilting his head in that general direction. "I mean, I'm already heading up to Baltimore on Thursday with one of the newbies. Don't want it to get stale."

"Think they expect us to spend the rest of the time taking robo-classes," Dante said. "Which, who the fuck does that?"

She frowned and shook her head at the nail color. Sparkly was not her thing. "It comes from a song," she replied. "Seemed to suit me."

Feeling slightly uncomfortable about talking about her life she shifted gears. "What about you? How'd you get to this place?"

"Good plan," Roscoe agreed. "I'm down for something off the list. How about Friday? I'm gonna be recovering from a grueling day of two entire classes, so might as well party."

Negasonic let out a snort of amusement added an eyeroll to that. "Overachievers? People who have no life?"

Roscoe shrugged. "My dad's in jail, I needed somewhere to stay," he said casually.

Okay, so he'd been intentionally tight-lipped about that fact up until now, but fuck it, right? He already knew her background was weirder than his own. No point keeping it a secret.

"There's no magic or heroes or anything where I come from, so shit got pretty weird over the summer. But I'm getting used to it."
