Second Floor Common Room; Friday Evening [09/01].

The need for parties and the social status assumed to go along with them was probably the easiest part of roboSummer's programming, easily the best lynch pin that connected the two Summer, that would make someone look at her eagerness to host a party and thinking yup, definitely Summer, nothing wrong here! She'd decked the place out with glitter and streamers, started pumping some sweet tunes, and made sure all the food and beverages were readily available and spread out on the table and counters.

And now all she needed was people.

...she really hoped there would be people, but, unlike OG Summer, she would definitely survive if there weren't.

Whoo, party!

Ever. In her life. So she had no idea how to actually treat one.

Oh. Well, Breq should have expected that.

"When humans are small they need protection. When they get angry or sad it's usually better to comfort them, and let them know that things will be good again. It gets complicated if that's not true."

Breq had subtly, without them realizing it, trained young officers, but she hadn't raised children, so this was just information from what she had seen.

Peridot considered that for a moment.

"So... I should be condescending?"

Comfort was complicated on Homeworld.

"Not quite," Breq replied. "It should involve kindness."

Now she was curious to hear if that was a concept Peridot understood.

But she already guessed what Peridot would prefer.

"Humans make no sense," Peridot muttered, shaking her head. "I'll try both, but if it doesn't work I'm going to go right back to kicking."

Breq hoped this wouldn't create problems for Peridot, but she guessed Paris wasn't well liked here by anyone, considering her behaviour. Perhaps Breq herself could balance things out if necessary.

"I hope it goes well," she said. "You really shouldn't have to put up with people like her, not in a place like this."

"It's been my home for a while now," Peridot grumbled. "I shouldn't have to put up with people telling me what color I should be."

Peridot paused at that. Gave that question the consideration she felt it deserved. And then nodded.

"I'm free."

It was as simple as that, really. She could be herself. SHe could be whatever she wanted to be.

"I still haven't decided how I feel about the cost," Peridot noted, "but I'm finding that there are things about this planet that make freedom seem worthwhile."

"Friends," she offered. "New discoveries. A chance to discover who I am that I never would have had on Homeworld."

"Those are important things," Breq said. "All of them. Although finding out who you are isn't always easy."

She had seen humans struggle with it for two thousand years.

"It isn't," Peridot agreed. "It took me most of my time here just to accept that it was an option in the first place."

She rubbed one of the pizza stains on her gloves.

Peridot glanced at the stained gloves, then looked down at her own hands.

"It's the best I've got," she settled on. "That will have to do."

"Any plans for now?" Breq asked. "More specific ones?"

Somehow Peridot didn't strike her as someone who liked to sit around idly.

"Learn about the Earth," Peridot replied with a shrug. "If I can't go home, the least I can do is ready myself to spend my life in the next best thing. It's difficult to make plans beyond that until I have my bearings."

"You aren't from Earth either, then?"

That was kind of reassuring, actually. Perdiot always felt like she had that little bit more in common with people who weren't familiar with the planet they were on.
