Second Floor Common Room; Saturday Morning [01/29].

A letter had arrived from Libby's grandma, with a little note and a little spending money, pointing it out that it wasn't much, but it was more than what she was used to making do with. And while it would have seemed wise to save it, Libby missed making big meals with her mom so much that she headed to the store, picked up what she needed, and then headed back to the common room to start putting together a nice breakfast casserole.

And if anyone woke up and wanted to have some with her, all the better, but if not, she already had some Tupperware ready to go to go and a list of people she planned on distributing the leftover to.

Did Kurt have a super sense of smell? No, that wasn't part of the whole Mutant thing. But that didn't mean he couldn't tell when something good was being cooked up.

"Oh that smells good, Libby" he said as he came into the common room area, making a b-line for the coffee pot. "What is it?"

There was definitely something about the way the dorms were built that seemed to let certain aromas just permiate the entire building.

"Good morning, Kurt!" Libby smiled over at him from where she was cleaning up a few of the dishes, finishing with what she was rinsing to grab a towel and wipe her hands dry. "It's nothing much, just a breakfast casserole. Would you like some? There's plenty! I got that one right there, and I just put a second batch in the oven."

"Oh that sounds amazing. I'd love to try some, thank you Libby."

Kurt paused for a moment and then hesitantly asked "Do you like cooking a lot? My Mutti and Vati.. I.. I mean my Mom and Dad use to cook together all the time."

The aromas really did permeate through the building, didn't it? Or at the very least, down the hall, which was distracting to Sakaki and her realization that she might be a little hungry, which was why she was wandering down to the common room and dangerously tempting fate.

"Is someone making breakfast?" she asked.

It didn't hurt to ask. She wouldn't put it past this place to just randomly start smelling like food for no good reason, after all.

"I miss it," Liberty offered, with a wry sort of smile, since she knew that wasn't the same as saying she liked it while managing to still be the truth. "I usually help Mama in the kitchen, since we've got so many mouths to feed, although it's usually a lot of stuff you can just set-and-forget for later. A big casserole of what's leftover in the fridge and eggs from the hens outside's usually a Saturday morning staple, though."

And, through her explanation, she'd dished out plenty for Kurt on a plate and handed it over to him.

"Pretty sure I've got some catching up to do on meals, anyway," she added.

"I miss it too. I... I hadn't realized quick how much I missed it until I got here and started taking Dr. Lecter's class." Kurt had to stop and laugh for a moment at the other thought that crossed his mind. "I think Scott's love of take out and Logan's perpetual bachelorness has been a bit of a bad influence. On my cooking and eating habits at least."

Because yeah.... take out, microwave dinners, and an excessive amount of beer was not the best example og a healthy way to live. And Kurt knew that... but eh was still surprised to find out just how far from his 'cooking homemade meals nearly every day' upbringing he had slipped.

"And this tastes amazing, Libby" he said after taking a moment to enjoy the first bite and gave her an appreciative thumbs up.

"Hey Sakaki!" Kurt called out in greeting with a wave and a smile."

It was amazing wasn't it how many people just showed up in the common room area that never seemed to be anywhere else.

... You'd be lucky to have leftovers, Libby, considering who was just about to step into the common room.

Okay, it was less Juillenne that was the big eater and more the large mountain cat with her, but still.

"Is that breakfast I smell?" she asked, because much like Sakaki, she'd learned it never hurt to check.

It was true, the student body at Fandom High managed to somehow be an even bigger and hungrier brood than the Hazletts could even imagine being, even with two rapidly growing boys!

"It sure is!" she answered, brightly and proudly before she actually looked over at Juillenne and her eyes went wide.

"Goodness!" she gushed. "But that's an awful big cat!"

Her brothers often teased about mountain lions in the woods when they were hunting, and sometimes you could hear some kind of large cat on the prowl at night, but she'd never actually seen one before. Certainly not so up-close, and definitely not indoors!

It probably wouldn't help much to stare, but that was all Sakaki could do, once Camden walked in with Juillenne, because it was one thing to be mauled by cute kittens and housecats, but this...

To say she started to sweat a little and wonder if she could safely slip past through the door was an understatement, anyway.

Well, perhaps that was what made it so common!

"H-hello," Sakaki nodded back, almost the edge of a bow but not quite. "K-Kurt, isn't it? How are you this morning?"

"You're not wrong," Jules acknowledged. "This is Camden," she reached down to scratch between said mountain cat's ears. "My familiar."

And Camden couldn't help but notice that this particular human seemed a little... well, nervous.

Which meant, naturally, that she just had to oh-so-casually flex one of her paws so that her claws were visible for just a second.

(Not that she'd actually ever attack someone as harmless as this girl appeared to be, but that didn't mean she wasn't above a little teasing.)

"Aye, that's right" Kurt said with a grin. "I'm doing pretty good. Classes are done for the week so that's always nice. How have you been?"

Kurt looked up from where he had been relaxing after a good breakfast of his own. As hard as he tried not to stare, knowing full well what that felt like on the receiving end of, he couldn't help but let his eyes linger on the student he hadn't met before and the impossible to miss feline at her side.

"He's... safe right?" he asked, eyes still fixed on the large cat, unable to really form any sort of normal greeting in the current situation.

"Oh, no," Libby insisted, shaking her head, "it's much better when Mama makes it, and when there's fresh eggs and potatoes..."

She turned maybe the faintest bit red with sheepishness, remembering that false modesty was sometimes as bad as no modesty at all, but also just for a moment of enjoying a compliment, and then nodding her appreciation of it. "But thank you," she said. "I'm glad you like it. Like I said--"

But she was doing it again, and she stopped herself before disparaging the dish again.

"I mean," she amended, and said, again, "thanks."

"Familiar?" asked Libby, tilting her head curiously. "Is that what y'all call pets where you're from?"

She'd had someone ask about what chickens looked like on Earth last week, different names for pets (and those pets being mountain cats!) didn't seem all that unlikely, really!

"Alright," Sakaki answered, truthfully enough, because she had a pretty light classload this semester, so it was pretty such just those, the shelter, and cat magazines these days.

"How did those pictures turn out?" she then asked as if the mun hadn't completely forgotten she was in that class la la la. "In class the other day? With the..."

She gestured mildly, pointing up at the ceiling a little.

It was kind of hard not to notice your classmates taking pictured from the ceiling, really...

And Sakaki swallowed down the large lump that had suddenly appeared in the throat.

But the flutter in her chest that seemed to come along with it was far less fear and much more about how even the biggest cat paws were unbearable cute. In a way, the fact that even a giant feline had such adorable toebeans was almost too much to handle, and her eyes closed against a wave of suppressed squeeing inside over the thought of this big old cat playing around like a little kitten and...and....

OHGOD, they didn't deserve cats! If it weren't for the fact that she would probably be straight-up MURDERED by a cat like this, she would pet its big old head and scritch behind those perfect big ears so. Much!

“She,” Juillenne corrected. “And safe enough. Just don’t give her reason to annoy you.”

Or be visibily nervous enough that she felt like teasing you. Sorry not sorry, Sakaki.

"Oh, absolutely not," Juillenne shook her head. "Pets are for other people. Naturalists have familiars. It's- a much deeper bond." Literally, a mental and emotional one that let both Juillenne and Camden understand- and act- on the other's emotions.

All things considered, she might even be safer around a cat like Camden, because, propensity to tease or not, Camden was also in possession of enough self-control that she wouldn't just attack blindly the way a housecat would.

"Cam," Jules sighed, poking her in the side. "Be nice."

Kurt gave her a nod as he enjoyed a few more bites before taking a quick break so as not to appear like the stereotypical starving bottomless bit of a teenage boy.

"So you use fresh eggs back home you said? How many animals did you have on your farm?"

"Got some really cool ones I think!" Kurt replied happily. "I can show you some of them at the next class if you'd like. I'd do it now but, camera is back in my room still."

And for a split second Kurt had thought about porting to the room real quick to get it but thought better of it. The last time he had done that when Libby was writing her letters he had been off a bit on his aim and had ported into the hallway rather than into the room. It was too early to g porting around everywhere as he was still learning the layout of the dorms. He had been lucky because he knew he could have just as easily ended in inside the wall or something worse!

"Oh right, sorry there girl" he said with a slight bow of a head to the cat and to Juillenne.

He came from a place where humans could end up looking like he did (though he wasn't aware of anyone exactly like him. So he wasn't about to make an assumption that the big cat wasn't as sentient or intelligent as anyone else he might run into in a place like Fandom.

"We haven't met yet" because he would totally remember a pair like these two. I'm Kurt. Kurt Wagner" he said with a slightly shy grin to Juillenne. "I'm one of the new students."
