ROOMS 239/240

Jack is currently standing in the hallway in front of his door, he has a sledge-hammer slung over his shoulder and loudly announces to the hallway:

"Any of you guys who wants to help break down a wall is free to come help! Just come on in and start helping!"

Roy looks indignant, then sighs. "Yeah, chemistry-like stuff. Lots of science. Using energy to transform matter from one form into another of equal value and similar properties, but different shape. Transfiguration, transmutation. Lots of geometry and physics."

Harry shrugs. "Sorry. The only alchemy I know of is the Philosopher's Stone. Most of the other stuff I know is just called 'magic'."

Roy is suddenly very curious. "The Philosopher's Stone? The legendary stone that can magnify the power of any transmutation and allow the alchemist to bypass the laws of equivalent exchange?"

Harry frowns. "I don't know if it does all that. I know it extends life." He shrugs. "It was just a reddish stone, like a chunk of crystal, except that it felt a bit waxy to the touch."

"That's amazing," Roy replies. "It's only a legend in my world, a fairy tale. No alchemist has been able to reliably create a Philosopher's Stone-- at least not in the recorded part of history."

"Really?" Harry prods at some brickwork. "It was created in my universe by a guy called Nicholas Flamel. He's dead now, although he used it to extend his lifespan to about six hundred years."

*thinks of Voldemort and swings a little harder*

"In my dimension Nicholas Flammel was a famous alchemist-- one of the pioneers in the field. If you see a short, annoying kid that goes by the alias [livejournal.com profile] alchemic_bean running around in a red coat, the back of his jacket has an image of the traditional signature mark of Flammel's work."

Roy tries swinging underhanded, with interesting if dusty results.

"I find it fascinating how the universes of various students overlap in the smallest and oddest of ways."

Harry puffs the dust away.

"Wow. I didn't know that. Have you spoken to many students about this?"

[identity profile] harried-potter.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Uh, the overlaps I guess."

[identity profile] alchemy-4-arson.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Roy gets a thoughtful expression. "You know, I haven't really. Most of my conversations so far have been meetings--except the incident in geology that got me detention this weekend. It might be interesting to analyze overall similarities in the myths and characteristics of our various worlds, but large-scale social studies projects aren't my forte at all. Who knows how many worlds we make up in total."

"Who knows?" HArry echoes, then dismisses the idea. He's not cut out for 'large scale social studies projects' either.
