"Hypothetically I wouldn't do jack since I don't care about the ban one way or another," Angelus said. "But if somebody was asking my advice the first thing I'd ask in return is what they think the weapons ban is really about."

Her lips curve into a wicked grin. "It's rather more of a sword, I hope."

"You offering to be the sheath?"

"From time to time. I'm not the type to hang around a man's waist just because he's got a pretty blade."

"Good thing," Angelus's eyes twinkled with humor. "There's a chafing issue that's no fun for anybody."

"Wouldn't want that, now. Swordplay shouldn't be an irritation." Beka bit back a grin. "Think we can torture that metaphor any more?"

"Probably, but let's not."

Studying him, she dropped her chin on her arms. "So, how do we make this happen?"

"Which this are we talking about?" Angelus asked.

"Either the fucking or the common goals. Or both. Though we seem to have figured out how to fuck naughtily enough, it shouldn't be a problem to do it again."

"What's priority number one?" Angelus asked. "The weapons?"

Beka shook her head. "No. Honestly, I think that's a lost cause right now. Priority for me is getting this place to the point where I can breathe without someone telling me how to do it." She closed her eyes and felt her weapons in her hands. The sensation had only gotten stronger the longer she didn't have them. "Which, I think, means the trust building. You?"

"You're feeling trapped?" Angelus asked, not without sympathy.

Beka eyed him carefully. In her experience, predators showed sympathy about ten seconds before they struck to kill. And yet, he had to be feeling trapped too. She shrugged and said simply, "Yes."

"Must be driving you nuts," he said.

His manner was unreadable. Several flippant remarks settled on her tongue, but she bit them back. She blew out a breath and stuck to the truth. "I've spent my entire life a free spacer staying out of The Law's eye. Now not only do I have The Law's eye, but I have its damned thumb. I'm sane enough, but my temper is on a very short fuse."

"I get that," Angelus said. "Heck, just look at me. I send a girl a couple of valentines - no pun intended - and get punished six ways from Sunday. Downright discriminatory if you ask me."

She nodded. He probably wouldn't believe it, but she did agree with him. "It is. I send you flowers with a sexual invitation we both understand perfectly well and the flower shop says if there's any violence, they'll have to release my name to the police."

"See?" Angelus said. "This is what I'm talking about. Around here either you're towing the party line or you're not welcome, regardless of whether or not you're actually hurting anybody."

"Mmm-hmm. So the question becomes, what exactly is the party line, what precisely don't we like about it, and then, what can we do about it. Yes?"

"Give the girl a cigar," Angelus said, approvingly. With a smirk he added, "What you choose to do with it is between you and your subsequent letter to Playgirl."

"Once again, you wound me. You don't want to watch?" She ran her tongue over her lips and winked.

"All right, so, the party line... Admin makes all the rules, the rules favor the unarmed and what they'd call innocent and you and I would probably call dangerously naive. It's Admin's job via Rover to 'protect us' and monitor every activity that might be dangerous or even just irritating."

Three sharp tugs on the end of her braid evidence her frustration. "So much missing, Angelus. They say they want us to trust, but all the rules are about keeping us separated. And where's the concern for actually teaching us anything?"

(utterly OOC: first, I'm dying here. This is hilarious. Second, I was just reading over this and I apologize for the grammar atrocities my tired brain perpetrated. I'm more awake now.)
