::a note is affixed at the end::

"BYOB. And no talking about any weapons ban. Free cookies!"

*Beka pokes her head in* Heya, hon. I'll be around in a bit, OK? I've got some people to check on.

[identity profile] valentine-tart.livejournal.com 2005-09-30 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Beka blinks. "Hey, you got them fixed!" Holds up her right pinky. "Bring it on."

*smiles and shakes* Will do. I'm sure I'll be back.

She catches sight of Rogue on her way out and hopes Cally won't be pissed if she breaks the 'no weapons ban' thing rule.

Rogue wanders by, and pokes her head in. "Hey Cally! What's going on?"

[identity profile] marieann-d.livejournal.com 2005-09-30 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Cookies AND hands? I don't think I can pass that up," she says with a grin. "So, 'Let's all get along and vote for Cally?' I think that's a great theme. This place turned into a madhouse over the weapons business." She grabs a cookie. "So how's the cookie thing going so far?"

[identity profile] valentine-tart.livejournal.com 2005-09-30 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Beka sucks in a deep breath. "Rogue, I'd like to talk with you for a few minutes if you have time."

[identity profile] marieann-d.livejournal.com 2005-09-30 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Rogue still has half a cookie in her hand. "Uh, sure. What's up?" she asks, confusion obvious on her face.

[identity profile] valentine-tart.livejournal.com 2005-09-30 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Beka smiles. This is not the reaction she was expecting.

"OK. Yesterday, during the whole weapons ban debate, I said some stuff that people are taking totally wrong. And I wanted to clear that up with you.

"I... want my weapons back. I feel pretty crippled without them. I tried to argue that my pulse pistol or gauss or any of my other weapons are no different to me than your genetic advancements... meaning that they're a part of me, and no one should be allowed to take them away.

"I said that I didn't see anyone suggesting that Duce should have her snakes chopped off, or that mages should be submitted to neural blocks, to keep them from using their talents and weapons against people. But the people who can put their weapons down physically are being told to, and it's as crippling and horrifying for me as that might be for them."

Beka pauses to breathe, but only for a second because if she doesn't spit this all out to someone she's going to burst.

"Some people thought I was saying that the Admin should subject everyone to the same restrictions. That's not what I meant. And if they did, I'd be first in line to hurt anyone who tried to maim you guys." She shakes her head. "I only meant that they shouldn't do it to me either."

"And anyhow, I'm sorry. Because there is a difference. Someone else can pick up my gun and use it. No one else can use your abilities. No matter how much my weapons are psychologically a part of me, I guess it's not really the same."

[identity profile] marieann-d.livejournal.com 2005-09-30 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Rogue listens to Beka, silent, a sad look on her face. She sits on the edge of one of the couches, still not speaking. She looks down at her gloves, then back up at Beka.

"I guess I understand what you mean. I mean, as happy as I would be if all of a sudden I was normal, it would take some getting used to. I've already had a hard time getting used to my mind being mine, and not having to share."

She pauses, trying to sort out what she wants to say. "I had to get away from the school last night. I didn't want to be around when all this shit hit the fan. I understand the fear, but it doesn't make it any easier to deal with. I know that you didn't mean it the way it came out, but other people did." Rogue purses her lips. "Those are the people who scare me, because they don't even know what they're asking."

[identity profile] valentine-tart.livejournal.com 2005-09-30 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Beka sits down next to her, and tentatively offers a hand. "Thank you, for believing that I'd never want anyone to hurt you. Ever."

Her heart's racing a bit, because fighting beside Rogue was fun, good, and she wants this friendship to work. Agendas aside, Rogue matters. "I understand. People are afraid of me too." She smiles wryly. "With much better reason, I suspect. But it's easier for me to show that I'm not the scary ogre they think.

"I'd like to help. Really. What can I do? Besides making it clear that I consider you a friend and just another person?"

[identity profile] marieann-d.livejournal.com 2005-09-30 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Rogue takes Beka's hand and gives it a reassuring squeeze. "See, the thing that scares people the most is that they don't know. There's only a few people that know what I can do. Most people probably don't even know I'm a mutant, just a little weird for the gloves." She looks down.

"Yes, really, that's the only thing that will help, I think. And if anyone says that the people who are different are scary and should be registered, well, ask them to name us all. Because I bet money that they can't." She shrugs, a half-smile on her face. "Most of us blend in a lot better than Hank or I do."

[identity profile] valentine-tart.livejournal.com 2005-09-30 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Beka leans over and hugs Rogue, hard. "I told Kitty this and I'm telling you. You don't eat humans, and you don't lay eggs in them to use them as food for your young. You don't breed with pretty Alpha-fem to improve your genetic stock, and you're not a zombie. In my book, that makes you just plain people no matter what kind of cool tricks you can do. Anyone who says different is going to have to prove it on my hide." Beka smiles grimly. "And that's not as easy to do as it sounds these days."

Still holding Rogue's hand, she sits up. "I'm not going to ask them to name you, Rogue. Because it'll start a witch hunt. I'm going to tell them that that they can register my weapons, but that registering humans is barbaric."

River comes in and flops full-length on one of the sofas. She flexes her very sore hands, examines her ink-stained fingers, and utters a general-purpose, all-occurances-considered "Blaaaaah."

[identity profile] river-dancing.livejournal.com 2005-09-30 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes, just... really tired," River says with a tired smile. "I spent most of the day researching in the library. I never knew there could be so much useless trivia about such a localized area."

[identity profile] river-dancing.livejournal.com 2005-09-30 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
River takes the cookie gratefully, then half-sits up. "I think something's going on around here. There's been more mystical disturbances than could easily be explained by simple coincedence." She takes a bite of the cookie, starts to speak, actually tastes the cookie, raises her eyebrows in appreciation, and then continues. "First, Professor Hellboy, who would have been teaching about the paranormal, vanishes without a trace. Next came the multiple werewolf sightings in the nearby forest. Then the all-out zombie siege."

She polishes off the cookie, looks as though she is considering licking her ink-stained fingertips, and frowns. "It feels as though there should be some connecting pattern, but I haven't figured out what it might be quite yet. Thus, the research. If I understand the area better, I might be able to assemble a coherent picture."

[identity profile] river-dancing.livejournal.com 2005-09-30 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
River nibbles at her lip, then admits, "No. But I distrust unhappy coincedences."
