Monday morning, second floor

He hadn't seen or heard anything from Vala since he left her Sunday morning for work. He knows that just because they're dating, that doesn't mean they're attached to the hip but he's getting worried. Especially as for some reason her mobile is out of reach and he's pretty damn sure that there is receipt on the entire island.

He knocks on the door of room 215, and knocks again when there is no response.

"Come on, Vala!" He shouts as he knocks once more and really hopes Kara won't come out to kill him. At this point he'll be happy to let Vala strangle him as long as she comes out.

"Hey man. What's going on? Vala giving you the cold shoulder?"

"Maybe she fell asleep last night, and then went for waffles this morning? Waffles are pretty alluring."

"Maybe one of the girls stopped by, asked her to help out with.. I dunno.. secret girls' business. It's been known to do the trick. Tell you what, if she still hasn't shown after this Ethics class I gotta go to, I'll help you look for her. She could've got a tip for a treasure down in town."

"Yeah." He looked a little uncomfortable. "Can I ask why? Just between pals. I mean, the way I understand how it's supposed to work, it'll teach the other kids about how slavery is bad and freedom is good and taking away freedom, even when giving something in exchange, isn't right. So I'm not really understanding why everyone's so up in arms."

Charlie frowned. "I don't.. what other point could there be, man? Slavery is bad. Period. A lot of kids don't get that and try to push other people around. Teach 'em a lesson that they shouldn't do it. Right?"

Fuck. He'd been too busy dealing with Parker and fielding questions and making sure people weren't going to kill each other to notice Professor Maclay talking to Cam. He'd always been somewhere else. He just took for granted what slant the assignment was taking because that was the only possible response to slavery that he'd ever considered feasible.

"No, pal," Kawalsky nodded. "Don't do the assignment if you don't want to. I didn't know that was the angle she was taking. "No wonder Liz and Janet were upset. Damn it." He was pissed off, not at Professor Maclay (although, he was a little frustrated with her for not coming clean with him), but at himself. "Here I was thinking everyone was just overreacting."

"Yeah. Everything you said.. just yeah. I can't drop out of the assignment now I've said I'll do it, but.. this won't be happening again. You hear about Parker? She's in the clinic. Ulcer went haywire."

"I dunno. I just got called in because of the Ethics thing, but I didn't really learn too much." He rubbed at his forehead. "Didn't sleep much either. Hey listen, I've gotta get going if I wanna get to class on time. I'll see you after class? We'll go look for Vala."
