Monday Night - Campus Grounds [locked to Sam Carter - NFB]

After finishing up with Cyborg Theory early and making a rather stupid brief call to the General (well, one of the Generals), Charlie and Sam headed out to take a walk and talk about what John Connor had told them about their possible future.

"So." Sam's not exactly sure how to proceed on this one. "You talked to John."

"Yeah. He called me. Was worried he freaked you out."

"He probably had a good reason for believing that. He did." Sam put her hands in her pockets as they walked.

"Yeah." He shoved his hands in his pockets. "You reckon he's from our universe? That it might happen there?"

"God, I hope not. Did he tell you that they recruited me? The company that's responsible, I mean."

"Cyber.. something. He said something about that. Is it likely, Sam? I mean, I dunno what kind of stuff R&D was into, but you guys had been out finding all kinds of tech for years. Do yo.. do they have enough to build this SkyNet thing?"

"Cyberdyne Systems," Sam replied. "And I don't know everything R&D has been into, Charlie. I wish I did. If they don't have it now...who's to say that they won't find it on the next trip, or the one after that, or...well, you get the point. Or what if I build it accidentally, by doing something that has to be done to save the world from the Goa'uld."

She begins to walk faster. "I could be the reason there's a nuclear holocaust, Charlie. I...I couldn't handle that."

What could he say to that? She was the smartest person he knew. She was capable of building this SkyNet thing if she wanted to and she had the resources to do it.. well, the older her did anyway. It was entirely possible that the Stargate program would find or develop the technology that would kill them all from the inside. "You thought about giving your doppleganger, the good one not the evil one, a heads up about it? I mean, if you both know that it's bad, it'll at least stop you guys from building it."

"I'm not really speaking to her right now, but maybe I'll send her a note. Or tell Teal'c or General Hammond over Parents' Weekend and let them deal with her."

She shrugged and kicked a small rock out of her way. "And you know the Air Force. If they want to build something, they'll build it, whether I think it's a good idea or not. I'm almost afraid to touch anything technological in case I set things off."

"As long as we're on the subject of John, though, you should know that I told him some...stuff."

"He kinda gave.. hints, but didn't really come out and say what you said, so I tried not to give too much information either. He talked about a 'portal', but no specifics, so I didn't give any, just reassured him of what I knew it *couldn't* do."

"He knows I'm a clone. And that I have access to a portal that can be used for time travel, among other things. I may have told him more. The rest is kind of a blur--I was really hysterical."

Thank goodness it's dark, so he can't see her face as she makes that embarrassing admission. And as long as she's going for total embarrassment...

"He laughed when I told him about being a clone."

"Yeah, he.. he didn't seem so clear on what that really meant. I think maybe he's a little hysterical about the whole thing too. I don't think he was laughing at you. He laughed when we were talking too, but it was more.. I dunno, a 'god, what else is there out there that I don't know about' laugh." He looked down at his feet, then back up to where they were headed. "He told me what happens. What's meant to happen, and how he's supposed to lead what's left of the human race, that his mom has known for years. Makes you wonder why we all ended up here, all at the same time.. if she got us all together intentionally."

"Wouldn't surprise me," Sam said. "That's one determined woman, and this place certainly prepares you to expect the unexpected. And...I'm not sure about the laughing. He never explained it. Just laughed and left a few minutes later. I haven't seen or talked to him since."

"He told me, too. I...didn't tell him about the Goa'uld. He's a kid--he didn't need to know that, too. Especially since we know that threat is real."

"These kids have enough to be scared of without knowing how close the Goa'uld have come to wiping us all out and how bad they want us all dead. But if Connor's right, the Goa'uld won't have to. We'll do it to ourselves." He shook his head. "This is what sucks about being a teenager again. No power. They're off saving the world and we can't do jack."

"Don't have to tell me twice. It's bad enough that we know we could be obliterated at any moment. We don't need that kind of thing to get around and start a panic."

She pauses, then says, softly, "That was one of the things I worried about with Janet. Obviously, that we wouldn't get her back, but also that we'd screw up somehow and she'd really take over. And we're going to save the world. Just not yet. If I can manage not to destroy it by then, of course."

"Sometimes I really wish we'd never found that damn 'gate."

"They would've come after us eventually, whether we found the 'gate or not. We just wouldn't have been ready when they did come. Like that movie, Independence Day. They just woulda shown up and blown us out of the sky while we waited around for them to do something, only we would've been screwed because we can't really upload a virus to the mothership. Even after hearing all that's happened these past few years, and what happened with me, I don't doubt for a minute that going through was the right thing to do." He went quiet for a while as they walked.

"Rationally, I know that. I do. Emotionally?" She sighed. "That's another story altogether."

Sam also went quiet, thinking as she walked alongside Charlie.

Damn. I'm thinkin' that John and Kawalsky needs to be talkin' some more.
