First Floor Lobby

Around 9 pm, Logan shuffles into the lobby, barefoot and wrapped in a ragged blanket. He has a bundle thrown over his shoulder, also wrapped in a threadbare blanket.

"Thank you, Bright One," Tara replies, smiling warmly at Phoebe. "Tea would be lovely. And is your Master treating you well?"

Phoebe quickly gets the tea and hands it to Tara, before sitting at her feet. After all, she was a slave and should not be on the same level as My Lady.

"My Lady, it pains me to see that I am one of the few that is indeed being treated well by her Master. My Beloved Lord seems to know of my needs before even I am aware of them. He has made sure that I am comfortable and that I know very clearly what he expects of his Bright One."

"I am glad he is treating you so well, Bright One," Tara replies warmly, a little surprised at how comfortable Phoebe seems to be in her role. "There's a comfort to knowing exactly what is expected of you, isn't there?"

Phoebe nods. "My Lady, I think that I am beginning to understand what you wanted to accomplish with this assignment. If it please My Lady, may Bright One tell you what I am seeing with all of this?"

Phoebe smiles. "It would seem that one of the things that My Lady was trying to teach her class is that in a true Master/Slave relationship, there is a tenuous bond that must go both ways. Yes, the Slave's job is to please their Master, but how can the Slave please if they don't know what is expected of them? There must be trust going both ways, as well. If the Slave does not trust their Master not to harm them or humiliate them, then for what reason would the Slave want to make their Master's life easier? On the other hand, a Slave who is made aware that they are cherished and important feels the desire to please and make their Master's life easier. There is a bond of trust and it must go both ways. If one does not trust the other, then problems arise."

Phoebe pauses to think. "A true Master/Slave relationship is not about ownership or abuse. It is not about having complete dominion over another person. The purpose of the assignment is to realize that the words Master or Slave are not just titles to identify worth or status. The words are merely words, it's the relationship and the accomplishments of such a partnership that really matters."

Tara smiles, her eyes soft as she strokes Phoebe's hair. "That's part of it, Bright One. A very important part. The relationship between Master and slave allows abuse because of the power dynamic - but so does that between teacher and student, or throughout much of history, male and female, parent and child. It can be abusive - but it doesn't have to be. Is it the abuse that is wrong? Or is it the power?"

She shakes her head. "We're not in class now, Bright One. I won't lecture you. But I'm very proud of you for that revelation."
