Open Hours for Grissom's Students (Room 146)

Grissom has his office open, sitting behind his desk, working on an insect timeline intently. He's put away the racing cockroaches in the bathroom for the weekend, but a few of his more gruesome displays and specimens are still visible.

He's made coffee for visitors, and is pretty bitter he can't have any.

Maia knocked on the door. "Dr. Grissom?"

Grissom looks up and smiles warmly, lacking the slight unease he had greeted her with in class on Thursday. "Hello Maia, how are you? Come on in."

Maia smiled. "I am good actually very good." Maia took a seat glancing around the room. "A fellow named Shawn has not been by to see you yet has he?"

Curious, he tilted his head. "No, should I be concerned?" he asked with an obvious hint of humor in his voice.

Maia blushed "Um no but I, well I know he is going to come talk to you and I wanted to get to you first. I am glad I did. Do you remember the conversation we had when I asked if you could 'fix' me?"

Grissom's smile turns down a little bit, and he stands up and walks around to the front of his desk, leaning on it slightly. "Yes. How does it involve this Shawn?"

Maia looked down for a moment. "well" she sighs "I think, he would be upset if he knew I tried to get rid of what I can do. He says 'Maia we're better then everyone else' because of what we are able to do, you know, it makes us special, more evolved then regular humans are. Like, well Shawn can heal people. He touches them and they are cured. I think, well I think Shawn would really get upset if he knew I felt that I had something wrong with me and wanted to be cured."

Grissom walked over to where Maia was seated and took a seat next to her.

"Maia, your friend Shawn is right in one way. There is nothing wrong with you. You have a... gift, albeit one that is difficult to deal with. And although I personally don't believe that any one race or subculture or group is superior to another, having self-confidence is an important thing for everyone."

He took a long breath and continued, "That being said, it is only natural to be confused, or seek guidance. I will not tell your... friend, Shawn about our personal conversations. If you want to share your feelings with him, you can do so. Okay?"

He gripped the arm rest between them tightly, unsure as to how to make her feel more at ease, and waited for her reaction.

"Have you thought any more about it? How to find out how they did it?" Maia said, hope in her voice. "Its ok if you havent I just, well the way DNA works and stuff and new developments everyday I thought maybe you had heard something."

"I have been doing some reading, but there haven't been any articles dealing with this type of mutation or manipulation published at least in the last few months. But there's always hope, the science leaps forward almost daily."

He watched her face, worried that the hope might dim in her eyes, and absent-mindedly reached out to touch her hand as a sign or reassurance.

"Someday we'll understand. Soon. I believe that."

Maia smiled softly, when his hand touched hers she saw it. It was quick, like the end of a film strip but it was there. Maia stopped smiling. It played again before her eyes. Maia shook her head slightly and gently pulled her hand away from his touch. She stared wide eyed at him.

He recoiled immediately. "Maia, I know this is difficult... I'm sorry."

Maia continued to stare at Grissom. "What- no its.." Maia paused "No sir, its not that at all don't apologize." Maia seemed to be searching for words. "Are you ok Dr. Grissom?"

The fear he had experienced when Maia came into class on Thursday now roared back against his temples, multiplying as he studied her face. His shoulders fell, and he looked into her eyes. "What did you see?"

Maia swallowed hard and looked at him sadly. "Your sick or you will be." Maia bit her lip "You were really sick, You-" Maia stopped "Cancer" She finally said looking away from Grissom's eyes, it was too painful to look into his eyes knowing what he was going to be going through soon.

"Yes," he admitted in a defeated tone. "I get the biopsy results on Monday. My... ahhh... stomach. Listen, Maia, I... this needs to be between the two of us for now, okay? Please."

Maia nodded slowly "What about Sara?" Maia breathed softly. "She, well she would want to know Sir." Maia stops "I am so sorry, that your sick."

"It's okay; I will be fine." He hedged, biting his lower lip for a brief moment. "I'm not ready, to tell Sara, or anyone else. I need more time. I need more... information."

Maia nodded again and then looked up "Shawn.. Shawn could heal you. I can get him it would take just a few moments Grissom. He's healed loads of people he won't mind at all." Maia is smiling now "And you won't have to tell anyone, he could do it now. I'll go get him." Maia starts to rise.

He stood up as well, calling out, "Maia, no. Not that I don't believe you, but we... I, don't understand the long-term repercussions of what has happened to you or your friend Shawn. What if...

I'll be fine. Dr. Wilson is an excellent doctor in his field. But thank you."

Maia stopped and turned slowly at Grissom's statement about her and Shawn. She blinked in surprise and looked hurt, very hurt. She nodded slowly then. "Well, if that is the path you have decided on. I wish you all the best Dr. Grissom." Maia's voice was not unkind or cold, rather hurt but the unfinished statement concerning her and Shawn.

He recognized her hurt, but was unsure as to its cause. "What I meant was, what if your friend Shawn's healing powers are only temporary? I'm not careful about my health; I never have been. If it were to come back, I might not be in a place where I took care of it properly. I've spent my life relying on what is familiar, what I know to be true. I didn't mean to insult him or his talents." He sighed. "Do you understand?"

Maia nodded "Yeah I understand. I do, your reasons behind your thought are sound and rational, very well planned and executed. In the end sir it matters what you are most comfortable with and your familiar and comfortable with science. I understand that. I won't mention it to anyone. Its not my place to do so." She smiled "Its not an insult its.." Maia pauses and then does not finish the sentence. "I do wish you all the best with it and if there is anything you need promise to please let me know."

Tilting his chin down toward his chest, he lifted his eyes. "Thank you, I will. And I don't want you to lie, or put you in a position where you would need to do so. If someone asks you, please just send them to me. In a few days... I need a few more days, that's all."

Maia smiled now, not big but small in an understanding way. "Take all the time you need sir. I won't tell anyone anything." Maia walked over to him, she took one of his hands in hers and held it for a moment. She smiled up at him. "Its ok sir. I'll be here when you need me." Maia released his hand slowly. She turned to leave the room.

He looked a little momentarily stunned by her acceptance and kindness, unable to properly articulate his gratitude.

As she walked away, he called out in a choked tone "Bye Maia... thank you." He hoped that she would understand he would, and did, need her friendship, once he had sorted out his head.

Looking down at Maia's schedule in hand, he glanced about the hall and spotted the correct room; after threatening the guards under hushed breath of what he would do to them if they followed him, he entered the room.

Grissom is once again seated at his desk. "Hello, may I help you?"

"Uh, yeah, I'm Shawn. Shawn Farrell? Has Maia told you that I'd be stopping by?" he asks nervously, hoping he hasn't come in at a undesirable time.

Grissom nods. "She did. Please, have a seat. How can I help you, Mr. Farrell?"
