[Room 306, Night] Gently there came a tapping...

6 opened the door to his dormroom and found himself face to face with Number 2. A different one, this time, but no less annoying.

"In truth, you're not even a teenager, 6. You're a 39-year-old man. After you resigned from high school, you found yourself at loose ends. Deprived of the educational experience, you sought a manner of completing it. You tried going back, but you were too old. You stuck out. Independent tutoring didn't work. Too isolated. You needed the high school experience, even as you mistrusted it."

"Virtual reality. After you'd exhausted all options, you turned to Yoyodyne Industries and their solution: create a high school inside your mind."

"There was... ah... trouble in the process. One of the lab technicians... well, accidentally downloaded the contents of his hard drive into the program. Pirated movies, television series, e-books. The boy had quite the collection."

"What wasn't affected by the information dump was formed by your natural tendency towards paranoia and suspicion. You believed, at some level, that you didn't deserve a second chance. Subconsciously, you tried to ruin it. You gave yourself a number and took away your name."

Number 2 smiled. "Charles Curtis, of course. One of my oldest and dearest friends." He sat down on the bed. "Which is why I'm here now."

"It is. Look, 6, there's been a problem. This process was supposed to happen in accelerated time, but it's not. It's happening in real time. Your body is beginning to atrophy. The longer you stay here, the worse it will get."

"It's not. You're hardwired in. You have to speak the passphrase in order to exit the program."

"I don't know it exactly. You have to speak your reason for resigning from your previous high school aloud. That's all they told me."

"I know that sounds ludicrous, but it's what they gave me. I only have a short span here. The matrix weakened a bit with this Parents' Weekend. It was obviously a subconscious call for outside help. Once that closes down, so does my window. If the program isn't off by then... well, I'm told the consequences could be quite alarming."

"Oh dear. You really are that far gone, aren't you, old friend? I understand you might need time, but there isn't a lot of it to give. I need the answer by tomorrow at midnight. If you need some time to think it over, take a stroll around campus. Take a look at everything around you and tell me it's real. Come home to us, Charles."
