Sunday afternoon, Dr. Carter's classroom

Since his mother and Raynor wanted to meet the people he associated with at the school, Belthazor reluctantly took them to Dr. Carter's classroom, checking to see if there were any JA members lingering after the Meet & Greet from yesterday.

The room was mostly empty, but a few people were there, including Beka, cleaning up in the back of the room.

Raynor pondered what Angelus suggested. "Belthazor still has important duties to perform. Perhaps, once he completes those, I will consider it."

"Oh, I see," Angelus said. "He's pathetic until somebody else wants him. What are you, three? If I distract you with a shiny object can I keep him for myself?"

"I am not Belthazor's mother," Raynor twitched, insulted that the vampire seemed to confuse him with Elizabeth. "I feel he has value and potential. You and I seem to agree on that."

Beka had heard enough. Phoebe wouldn't stand for this and neither would she. Addressing Raynor more than Angelus, Beka said quietly, "He has more value and more potential than you'll ever know."

"I want him to have more hobbies," Angelus said, addressing Raynor now since they seemed to have a rapport. "He could be doing so much more with what he has if somebody only encouraged him."

Raynor nodded at Angelus, finally trusting him somewhat. "Perhaps he could use some more encouragement. You think you can provide that?"

Elizabeth looked at Raynor incredulously. "You'd hand his training over to a vampire? Are you out of your mind? The Source will have your head!"

"Pure evil," Angelus pointed to himself. Then he held out his hands as though weighing something. "Source of all evil.... I'm willing to take the Vegas Odds."

"You think yourself an equal to the Source?" Elizabeth laughed. "I'm tempted to grab you and shimmer you to him so I can listen to you scream for mercy."

"Is he anything like the First?" Angelus asked. "I only want to know so I have advanced warning on being bored to death."

"Boredom will be the least of your worries, I promise you," Elizabeth said. "You'll be too busy wondering where it's going to hurt next."

"Out of curiosity," Angelus asked, "when you slept your way into evil did they give you those sayings in a handy little flashcard set or did you pick up the cliches all on your own?"

"If I slept my way into evil, I wouldn't have the problem of a pathetic half-human spawn," Elizabeth said. "I should've killed him when I killed his father."

"Should've, could've, would've," Angelus replied. "Are you cutting the cord now or what?"

"It seems Raynor is willing to hand off his training to you while he's here at the school," Elizabeth said, "but he still belongs to the Source and the Brotherhood until the Source says otherwise. Belthazor has been assigned an important duty, and when he fails to do it, Raynor will probably gladly give him to you."

Angelus motioned for more details. "And do I get to find out what this is or do we just hope I don't keep him up too late on a night when you need him?"

"Raynor will tell him what he needs to do. The timetable will be his own, but the sooner the better for him."

I hate being human. If only Illyana... no. That line of thought was far too dangerous. She couldn't even barter herself for Bel, because she was supposed to be his faithful girlfriend. Damn it.

Of course. Bel. "Bel," she murmured face close to his neck again, "they won't listen to me, no matter what I say. I'm no one. But you don't have to let them talk about you this way."

"There's nothing I can do," he said helplessly. "You've heard what my mother thinks of me. She won't listen to anything I say."

"You don't understand," Belthazor said, miserable, keeping his voice low. "I'm not strong enough and...they own me."
