Tuesday Afternoon
Veronica was on her way back to the dorm when she spotted Logan in the hall. Without thinking twice, she stalked over, grabbed his arm and dragged him into the nearby girls bathroom.
"What the hell are you doing, Logan? Trying to succeed where daddy failed? You just made me a target for the most evil students on campus."
Logan laughed. He pulled away from her and stuck his hands behind his head. "Yep, Veronica, it's all about you. Nothing to do with you accusing one of my friends of murder. But then, I shouldn't be surprised. I bet you wake up in the morning and accuse the paperboy of murder. Have you thought about getting a new hobby?"
"Have you thought about finding friends that aren't murderers? Logan, Angelus killed Kitty. I... I heard it with my own two ears." Her defensive posture slumped a little as she remembered the horrible sounds
on the recording.
"You heard it?" Logan asked in disbelief. "If you were a witness, why'd you wait this long to say anything?"
Veronica sighed. "I wasn't a witness. Marty was. Well, his digital audio recorder was. Marty doesn't remember what happened." She paused, remembering the Dean's instructions not to talk about it, but decided to tell Logan everything. She couldn't handle the thought of him hating her even more. "I guess Marty turned the recorder on when he ran into Angelus. I'm not exactly sure what happened, but he dropped it in the alley. I found it there and got the file restored." She deliberately didn't mention Marshall because she still felt guilty about that.
"Wow," Logan said. "Marty has a recording that proves Angelus is guilty?"
"No, Dean Bristow has a recording that proves Angelus is guilty. Actually, it's probably in Lamb's hands now, God help us all."
"Well, golly. I can't think of a single damned reason why Martin Blank would want to fake a recording that proves Angelus murdered Kitty Pryde. I mean, other than Marty being a suspect himself. But you're a clever girl. You probably thought of that," Logan grinned. "I mean, you wouldn't just go around randomly accusing... oh, wait." He tapped his index finger against his lips thoughtfully.
"I thought we moved past that, Logan. Remember, over the summer, whenyou told me you loved me I stood up for you after you were charged with killing Felix?" She shook her head. "Not that it's any of your business, but there is no way Marty faked that recording. If he had, don't you think *he* would have come forward with it weeks ago?"
"I remember how many people you accused before you found Lilly's real killer. Jake Kane, Duncan, me... anyone else? So pardon if I don't have a great deal of faith in your accusatory powers. And I think
Marty's smart enough to fake evidence in a way that you'd believe. After all," he shrugged, "guy's a professional."
"First of all, I didn't accuse Jake Kane of anything, my dad did. And, if you remember correctly, he was right. Jake tampered with Lilly's body to throw off the time of death. Second, I wouldn't have accused you if you had been honest with me. And third, that recorder was found in a trash dumpster and was so damaged that it took Marshall two days to retrieve the file. If Marty had faked it, I think he would have made it a little easier for me to find."
Logan held up his hands in surrender. "Believe whatever you want," he said. "But he didn't do it. You'll figure that out eventually."
Veronica's expression turned to one of great concern. "Logan, I liked Angelus and I trusted him. Hell, I wrote an article in the paper talking about what a great guy he was. But I know what I heard. He killed that girl." She paused, her voice catching before adding, "What can I do to
make you believe me?"
"Probably nothing," Logan said. "That's one of the disadvantages of being wrong."
Veronica closed her eyes. She didn't know why, but she had to make Logan believe her. Her eyes snapped open and met his directly. "What if I get you a copy of the recording?"
Logan looked at her. "I'd like to hear that," he said carefully.
Keeping her eyes locked on his, she nodded. "Consider it done. I can't imagine Lamb is any more careful about his evidence locker here than he was back in Neptune."
"Okay," Logan said. "Call me when you've got it. Am I free to leave, or did you want to accuse me of something, too?"
"Go," she said, pressing one hand against her temple in an effort to fight off the headache she was developing. "And Logan? Be careful."
Logan waved a hand dismissively as he left.
