Early Sunday morning: Common room

For some reason Lana couldn't sleep this morning. After tossing and turning for a while she finally gave up and wandered down to the common room. She curled up on the couch and turned on the TV, flipping around till she found something interesting.

She stumbled across an old episode of "The Farthest Edges" with an actor who looked frighteningly similar to Principal Bristow and settled back to watch it and maybe doze a little.

Maia wandered into the common room out of total boredom, it was to early to head into town for coffee and she really was warm and getting coffee would require her to actually become unwarm and she just was not willing to do that. Surprised to see Lana, Maia flopped down onto the couch opposite of her and glanced at the t.v. Raising an eyebrow at the likeness to Dean Bristow Maia said "Now thats scary."

Lana looked up and smiled. "Maia, hey." She glanced back at the TV. "Yeah, definitely. Though I still think he's a lot scarier in person. So... what are you up to?"

Having seen the Dean twice in his office in person Maia nodded in agreement. "Oh nothing much, done with math for the semester been studying like mad for Biology and Criminology" Maia sighed "How's Shep?"

Lana blushes furiously. "He's good. I think he's probably out jogging."

Maia caught the blush and grinned "Oh he's just good then not great?" Her eyes dancing with teasing fun.

"Maia, God..." Lana's face is even more red now. "He's, he's *Shep*..."

Maia was still leaning back smirking "Yes he is and Shep is adorable."

Lana's face softens and she gets a sort of far away smile on her face. "Yeah. Yeah, he is, isn't he."

Maia smiled like the Chesire cat "Yeah he is."

Lana looks over at Maia and rolls her eyes. "You're as bad as he is, you know?"

Maia grinned again "Indeed I am. I think thats why I like him so much." Maia laughed. "So tell me, how bad does he get?"

"Maia!" Lana turned bright red again, "I can't believe you asked me that!"

Maia's mouth fell open for a moment shocked at her own daring. "I'm sorry." She laughed blushing, "I think my lover is a bad influence on me sometimes."

"I guess!" Lana grins.

Maia picks up a pillow and tosses it at Lana. "Ok ok seriously though, have you kissed him?"

Lana blushes again. "Yes, actually we have. It was sort of... unexpected. I didn't really think we were, well... heading that way, you know? And then it just sort of happened."

Maia smiled "Oh thats when its the best though, when you don't expect it. The best are always like that." Maia smiled again lost in a thought. She was thrilled Lana had Shep after everything that happened with Justin

"Yeah, it was pretty amazing," Lana said with a little smile. "I wasn't sure how he'd take it, so I was really relieved when he kissed me back."

"Wait a minute... you kissed him?" Maia's mouth fell open "Oh my God Lana that is great!"

"Yeah," Lana said looking a little uncertain. "I was working on his hand - doing his PT, you know? And then I just... God, I don't know what came over me. I just leaned in and kissed him. And there was like this pause - probably only a second maybe - where he just sat there and I thought, 'Oh God, I have just ruined this really great friendship. He's never even going to speak to me again.' God." She shook her head.

"But he kissed you back...." Maia smiled

Lana smiled too, her eyes a little dreamy. "Yeah, he did. And then later, when he walked me back to my room after self-defense - and that's something he never did before either. He kissed me. So it wasn't just, you know, him feeling bad for me or whatever."

Maia laughed "Well of course not, I didn't think that for a second. He'd be an idiot not to kiss you back." Maia smiled at her friend "Hell, I have talked to the boy he's pretty decent in the intellegence area so if he would not have kissed you back, I think I would have to discount his I.Q." Maia giggled.

"Well, he is a *guy*, Maia. And most guys, they get a halfway decent girl kissing them, they kiss her back. But that can be just a physical kind of thing. I didn't want it to be something he felt embarrassed about afterwards or felt pushed into to kind of spare my feelings."

Maia nodded and frowned slighty. She really didn't have a lot of experience with guys. "Yeah your right." She said feeling like an idiot herself.

Lana bites her lip. "It's just... after everything that's happened here with... well, you know. If I ruined this... I don't know what I'd do. Her eyes look sad.

"Hey" Maia patted Lana's hand "Hey now its ok. Don't worry about that."

"Easy for you to say," Lana says with an effort at lightness. "You haven't already screwed up two relationships here big time. But," her face eases a little, "I think it is okay. I haven't screwed up the friendship at least. And the other..."

She blushes again thinking of Thursday afternoon. "Well, I guess I'd have to say we're more than just friends, but how much more, I don't know."

Maia seemed rather taken back by the first part of Lana's words. She looked at the floor her insides squirming, Lana had asked her to act like it never happened and she had but...Maia frowned and shifted uneasily in her seat for a moment. She nodded and swallowed hard at the rest of Lana's sentence. "I-I'm glad your more then friends. I-its ok if you h-havent figured it all out." Maia twisted her hands together nervously for a moment and glanced back at the t.v.

Lana gives Maia a rueful smile. "I know, I said I was done talking about it - them. But I can't help thinking about it sometimes."

She sighs. "I told Shep about them, you know."

Maia glanced back at Lana now, her curiosity peeked "Oh?"

"Yeah. I swear he has this *field* about him that makes me say things I never meant to say." Lana rolls her eyes. "We were hanging out together one night and it just kind of came out. He was really great about it."

"Well of course he was, of course he was." Maia said in a happy manner.

"He's really a good guy," Lana said with a smile. "I'm lucky to have him as a friend - or a whatever."

Maia smiled "Yep friends or whatevers are sometimes the very best things to have." Maia grinned thinking of her and Chiana.

"Yeah," Lana smiled that little secretive smile again. "It looks like the end of this year is going to be a good one for me. I sure didn't think it would be a few weeks ago."

Maia smiled "So are you still going to ask Shep home for the holidays with you?"

Lana looks startled, "Oh my gosh... With everything that's been going on, it's completely slipped my mind. Probably I will. I just want to see where this all looks like it's going, you know?"

Maia nodded "Yeah I kept putting off asking Chiana but" Maia smiled now brighter "She said she would."

"Really?" Lana beams. "Oh, Maia, I'm so happy for you!"

Maia seemed to glow all over "Yeah I know I am so excited." Maia started to say something more but held back and just smiled.

Lana sees her friend start to say something and then stop. "What? You can tell me."

Maia bit her lip and smiled a little "Ask me later ok..I-I just want to be sure before I say anything." She nodded to reassure Lana that she would tell her just not right then.

Lana nods, "Okay. I certainly understand wanting to be sure before I say anything."
