The gym, after second period

Stepping into the gym, Aeryn thinks it might have been a good idea to get down here more this week. She has enough faith in her own capabilities, but still, it never hurts to be prepared.

She pulls her gloves on, and starts hitting the punching bag. Too bad it can't fight back.

"Have to be," she says, stepping away from it. "At least it keeps people off my back."

"I can see why. Looks like it would hurt to be on the receiving end of one of those punches." She started to stretch, she wasn't sure what they'd do but starting out without warming up probably wasn't that great of an idea.

"That's the point," Aeryn nods. "Keep them from hurting you by hurting them more. I go a lot easier when I spar, by the way."

Isabel looked up from where she was sitting on the floor stretching. "That's good to know the mun already gets her ass handed to her on a regular basis when she spars in RL."

She stretched her arms over her head one final time and then got to her feet. "Where do I start?"

"First thing you need is blocking," Aeryn tells her, and puts her own arms up in the position. "Like this."

She raised her arms, trying to imitate Aeryn's position. "Like this?"

"Right. You want to keep at least one arm up as much as possible so when I come at you like this," she says, slowly putting one fist forward but not coming close to hitting her, "you can just knock my arm away."

Isabel watched as Aeryn's fist came forward and used her arm nearest to it to push it to the side. "Okay, that makes sense. Of course it you were actually attempting to hit me I might have a problem."

"A lot of it is instinct. If something comes towards you like that, you know to either avoid it or you'll get hit."

"True, the instinctive reaction to avoid being hit." She brought her arms back into position and shifted them around. "So it's a matter of keeping myself covered? And then learning how to hit or kick at the same time?"

Aeryn nods. "It can be difficult at first, but it gets easier. Sometimes quickly, if you have to do it for real."

"I'm reasonably coordinated so I hope that'll help. That and practice." She stopped for second, her face serious. "I can't imagine doing this for real. But then again I don't think I'd ever imagined that I would watch my friends get grabbed by a vampire. It's amazing how things change."

Isabel would like to add that she's also really impressed that Aeryn is leading the second team on Friday night. But it's the gym and she doesn't want to say anything that'll be reported on the radio. So instead she brought her arms back into position and asked, "So how would I block some of the kicks you were doing?"

"Mostly you just have to be alert and quick. If I kick at you like this..." she says, and lifts one leg to slowly send it towards Isabel's hip, waiting to see what she does.

Isabel dropped her arm down to push Aeryn's leg away. "I should probably move as I do this though? Make it harder for you to connect?"

Aeryn nods as she straightens from her position. "Anything you can do to keep me from hitting you is good."

"Okay, blocking, moving, keeping my balance, not falling over. I think I can do this," Isabel said. "Do you want to try it a little bit faster?"

"If you're ready for it," Aeryn says.

She does go to punch at Isabel's shoulder this time, not hard enough to hurt too badly if she does connect.

She brought her arm up to block and managed to push it away in time.

"Good." She tries it again, with her left arm this time.

Isabel blocked using her other arm, but she might have left herself a bit open doing so.

Aeryn uses her right arm to go for the opening, and stops herself short. "You don't want to let that happen," she tells her.

Looking down Isabel saw a fist heading right to her torso. "Yeah, that could be a problem. So I need to remember to bring that arm back in after blocking or even hitting?"

She got back into positon. "One more time?"

"Always bring the arm back in. Otherwise you're just going to get hit."

She trusts Isabel not to fall for the same move twice, so Aeryn starts off with another punch at her left shoulder.

She blocked using her left arm and then quickly pulled it back in close, all the while keeping her eyes on Aeryn and watching for her next move.

There's no opening, so Aeryn's next move is another hit from her left, lower this time.
