The gym, Thursday after second period

Aeryn's in the gym not too long after Criminal Justice ends, doing some warmups with the punching bag before Isabel's due to show up. The good mood is getting a little worrisome. It's new. Aeryn's not used to it, especially on a regular basis. The punching bag, however, if it were sentient, would probably be really glad for this.

"Should I try using both hands?" Isabel asked. "Or try to go a little faster? And are you okay with this? Weren't you pretty bruised after Friday?"

"It's been almost a week, I'm fine," she says. "Do whatever you're comfortable with. I can handle it."

Isabel nodded, "If you say so." She punched several times, trying to alternate which hand she used and where she was punching towards.

Which keeps Aeryn moving a little, trying to block the shots. She could go faster, but she's still trying to adjust to sparring with beginners, so one shot might hit her in the side.

Isabel stopped as her her punch connected, "Are you okay?" she asked, still not used to the whole idea of hitting people on purpose. "And I did that, right? I mean, you didn't leave yourself open deliberately?"

Aeryn, for her part, hasn't even really backed off. "No, that's all you," she tells her. "And never apologize for hitting anyone in here. That's kind of what we're here for."

Isabel nodded and got back into position. "Logically I know that. But I think a part of me still expects my mom to come through the door yelling that it's not nice to hit people." She frowned, "But then she never had to worry about vampires or snow monsters."

She started to punch again, watching for openings.

Watching Isabel's hands so she can keep blocking the shots, Aeryn asks, "You got yelled at for that?"

"A bit. Nice children don't hit was repeated occasionally." Isabel said between punches. And then remembered Aeryn had probably had a very different childhood. "It's a cultural thing. Hitting is considered violence and that's frowned upon."

"I think I like my way better," Aeryn admits, because she's the one blocking punches.

Isabel would have shrugged but she's still throwing puncheds and trying to get through Aeryn's blocks. "It's not all that bad. Most of the time it's not an issue. Occasionally there'll be a huge fight between two kids, most often guys, and everyone will watch and cheer but otherwise differences are settled in other ways."

"Huh." Not exactly something she's used to, but then again, this planet's weird. She's used to that. She drops her arm a little low, not exactly on purpose but curious as to whether Isabel will hit her shoulder oor not.

Isabel grinned, "Trust me. Watch two guys with a grudge play basketball. There's all kinds of posturing going on. But hopefully by the time the games over, they'll have worked things out." Aeryn's shoulder seemed to be open so she punched towards it.

Aeryn's a second late in ducking back, so Isabel's fist connects with her shoulder. Not hard, but it's a hit. "Still good?" Aeryn asks, rolling her shoulder and getting back into position.

"I'm fine. This is fun." Isabel punched again. "What's next week's lesson?"

Aeryn likes her. And blocks the shot. "Maybe next week I'll hit back, too."

"Uh-oh," she said, "That could be scary. But I mean that in a very good way." A few more punches and she stopped, shaking her arms out and stretching them over her head. "This really was fun."

"You're doing pretty well," Aeryn tells her. "I'm impressed." And that is definitely a compliment.

"Thanks," Isabel says, and means it. She has a feeling that's high praise coming from Aeryn. "Same time next week?"

"I'll be here," she nods.

"Great." With a smile, Isabel headed towards the door.
