Sam was laying on her back on one of the sofas, pretending to study and finish her homework, but really watching bad daytime television.
ETA: Sam has now left, but the television was left on and the book she'd been reading was face down on one of the end tables.

She ran up the stairs and into her room, grabbed her jacket (and her cell phone), and ran back down the stairs to the first floor, putting it on as she went.
