Outside dorms, Wednesday Evening

Ranma is jogging around on the top of a fence aimlessly. His sparring earlier that day had not worn him out and he tries to pass the time before he goes to bed.

Tim, on his way back to the dorms did a double take at the kid running on top of the fence. "Holy crap."

Calls down in greeting, "Yo."

Tim waved, still a bit in awe. He didnt' think that was possible in real life. Then he mentally thwapped himself for that thought. "Hey."

Ranma hops down and lands easily on two feet. "Do you know what there is to do around here at this time? I'm gettin' a bit bored."

"Well I'm kinda new here myself." Tim admitted. "All I know right now is the dorm common rooms. I'm sure there's some kind of night life. No town with a high school would be without one."

"Oh I'm Ranma Saotome." He puts out his hand to shake, finally getting more used to this Western style custom.

"Tim Desmond." He shook the kid's hand. "Where are you from Ranma?"

"Nowhere specific. I'm from Japan but I've traveled most of my life. How about you?"

He drops to his usual pose, hands folded behind his head.

"New York. Pretty much primarily. I can't say I've traveled much."

"New York... city? Or the state? Isn't that that big city? I'm sorry I don't know geography that well."

He's a bit embarassed by his lack of knowledge but he tries not seem fazed by it.

"The city yeah. Which is in the state. Convenient that."

"What easier way to remember the capital of your state?" WAS it the state capital? It better be or he just looked stupid.

"I thought the capital was Washington DC." He nods matter-of-factly.

"That's the capital of the whole country." tim explained. "Each state also has it's own capital."

"Oh now I remember..." He racks his brain for a moment. "Isn't New York's capital... Albany?"

"Well I just have time on my hands to bother knowing. With such a big city I'm sure you had better things to do." He smiles a little trying to make him feel better.

Ranma is glad that Tim appears to be feeling less dumb now. "I wouldn't condemn you for it."

He smirked a bit. "Preciate that."

"You seem like a guy who would do the same for me. So I won't tell anyone." He nods and smiles a bit laughingly.

Tim grinned as well. "Will do. Say how'd you do that with the running on the fence thing? I've never seen that outside the movies."

Ranma laughs a bit and springs back up onto the fence. "It's from a lifetime of balance training. The martial arts style my dad taught me it a lot about jumping and balancing. Want to see a trick?"

"Absolutely." Tim said.

He enjoys this little trick just because it's pretty fun for him to do too. He crouches to grab the bar of the fence with both hands and then proceeds to lift his feet up into a handstand. Lifting one hand out to the side he makes that a one-handed handstand. He proceeds to push off with the one hand that's planted on the fence and flips off to land next to Tim. He didn't really think of a way to finish it off so stands there pausing before he says, "Tadah?"

"Holy crap." Tim said. and asks to see the trick with the cold water "You've been studying this stuff for how long?"

"My whole life. I'd say it's worth it if it weren't for certain drawbacks." He looks a little bitter. He wonders why everyone wants to see his OTHER trick.

"Not much free time huh?"

"Yes that's exactly it. My manhoodyouth completely stolen from me in all that training." He doesn't appear to mind that much about "losing his childhood" but the manhood he's pretty pissed about. He sounded a little saracstic.

"Well at least you've got a summer to have fun now right?"

"I guess it's for fun. We still have to do classes and things." Fun wasn't really his purpose in coming in the first place, but he figures he'll humour him because he doesn't want to lose his chances at making his first male friend.

"True." Tim said. "But the classes aren't all the time."

"True." He mimiced him a little when he said this. "I'm just not the most social person so it's kinda hard. I didn't come here thinking it would be realy easy. I guess that's what I meant to say."

"Well from what I hear, life on the island is kinda crazy, so, it might not be all that easy."

"It was pretty hard learning english before I came. I still think in Japanese, maybe someday it'll change." He figures his little quirk just might add to the crazy-ness once it gets out. He hopes that won't be for a while.

"Well hey even we native speakers have to study it for four years in High School. So kudos for mastering it."

"Well I just thought of it as a battle or something. I guess it worked for me. So why'd you leave New York?"

"Well some friends of mine heard about the weirdness here, and since I deal with weirdness back home, they figured this would be a good learning expierence for me."

He nods, this is satisfactory answer. Standing idle for so long he fidgets a bit. Tapping the tips of his toes on the ground, this might be interpreted as boredom in the conversation but it's really just that he has too much energy and doesn't like to stay still.

Misinterprets it. "so, uh, I guess I'll see you around."

He nods, inwardly saddened. Damn his hyper-activity, probably undisagnosed ADD. "Nice to meet you Tim. Hope you uh..." he pauses for a minutes trying to think of a good thing to say, "have a good evening." Lame. He inwardly kicks himself for saying something dumb.

"You too. Hey if I hear of any kinda stuff to do at night, I'll let you know 'kay?" Of course, as one used to New York, anything here was probably...well since he never did any of the nightlife stuff in New York, he'd have no basis for comparison.
