Fourth Floor Common Room, Thursday Evening

Having scoped out the common room that morning, Dean headed down to it after supper.

Raiding the small kitchen attached, when Dean finally made it to the couch in front of the tv, he had a couple of sodas and a big bowl of popcorn. Sitting down, he grabbed the tv remote and flipped until he found some old B monster movie. He grinned and settled in for the evening.

Food, drink and bad movies. Not much more a guy needed to enjoy an evening.

"The Principal sort of suggested it," he said, the grin becoming more of a leer. "Makes it a lot easier to like."

"So what you're saying is that you were just waiting for a pretty woman to give you a name?" Dean asked.

Alec looked at Dean, eyebrows arched slightly. "Yeah?"

Dean thought it over, putting himself in his double's place. "Makes sense," he finally decided.

"It's not a bad name though," he said, not quite able to keep the grin from returning.

Dean found himself grinning in response. "No it isn't. Could've been much worse."

"I think I'll keep it. Maybe even find a last name to make round it all out," he said. "Alec Smith? Alec... Winchester, even?" Alec cocked his head, seeing how it sounded out loud.

"That would confuse things, wouldn't it?" Dean found he really didn't mind though. Alec Winchester. It even scanned well.

"Yeah, maybe," he conceded, not too disappointed though the idea was sort of funny. "You know, I don't think I ever asked where you guys were from or anything."

"Lawrence, Kansas, though we haven't lived there for ten years now."

"I think I cut down into Kansas on my way here," Alec said, thinking back. "The midwest is lots of flat, is all I got out of it. Where you been living since then?"

Dean shrugged. "Nowhere. Everywhere. We moved around a lot." He hesitated then said, "Y'know if you did want to use the name Winchester, I... it would be okay. For all we know, if you do have some of my DNA, you actually have a right to it."

Alec shrugged, but it was an intriguing thought, having actual relatives of a sort. "It is possible, I guess." He smirked. "If so, you guys are in for a hell of a surprise in about twenty years."

Dean snorted. "What else is new."

Alec grinned, shaking his head a little. "Maybe I don't want to be a Winchester. For all I know, you guys are really Jehovah's Witnesses or a travelling sideshow family or something."

"You've found us out. Sammy's really the dog faced boy. We just make him shave so we don't have to deal with the shedding." He grinned.

"Well, that explains it," Alec said, nodding. "What does that make you, or is Sammy the star attraction?"

"I'm the incredible multiple man." He grinned sardoncially at Alec. "Apparently."

He laughed, sitting up and leaning forward to grab some popcorn from the bowl on the table - which made the barcode tattoo on the back of his neck plainly visible, should Dean notice these things. "Unless you've got others hidden away, you're not much of a multiple man without me around."

Dean shrugged. "Sammy's not much of a dog faced boy without the hair either." He caught sight of something on the back of Alec's neck and looked closer. "Dude, is that a... barcode?"

Sitting up, mouthful of popcorn, Alec just looked at Dean blankley until he managed to swallow enough to talk. "Yeah."

Somehow, either no one had yet noticed it, or just not saw fit to comment on it, which was fine with Alec. It also meant he hadn't thought too much about how to explain it, either.

"So... do you just have freaky taste in tattoos?" Dean asked slowly.

He shook his head slightly, then shrugged as he figured Dean knew some things already - why not that? "It's not actually a tattoo. It's coded into my DNA, for identification purposes."

"They don't give you a name, but they give you a freaking barcode?" Dean shook his head. "That's whacked, man."

More than whacked. The entire idea just felt wrong to Dean.

"Names encouraged familiarity," Alec said, his tone deceptively mild. "Easier to give someone orders if you don't have to think of them like people."
