In search of old friends (3rd floor corridor, early Sunday morning)

Meeting all the new people and just getting used to the place had been distracting her from an important question: Why was Kaylee here? And even stranger: Why was Zoe working here? Especially the latter didn't make any sense at all to River. She was used to weird things and could take in complex situations, but this was confusing. If Simon had been here she could have kicked and screamed, but he wasn't, and that was one of the points of being here.

Talk to Kaylee first.

River sneaked down to the third floor and knocked on Kaylee's door.

Kaylee cheerfully went to answer the door, wondering who'd be visiting so early in the morning.

"Hello."

River entered the room and perched herself on Kaylee's bed. She glanced around the room.

"This place is interesting."

Kaylee smiled at River. "Yeah, it's unusual that's for sure."

River smiled back. "You didn't tell me you were coming here too."

"Uh, yeah, decided sorta at the last minute. Why should you have all the fun this summer?" Kaylee said, still grinning.

Ok, that was true. But River had assumed that when she was away her brother would have more time for others, which would probably mean Kaylee. On the other hand, he might have messed things up as usual.

"But Zoe, why is she here?"

"Zoe? She's not our Zoe. She's from a different timeline or something. Kinda made my head hurt," Kaylee explained. "Remember the part about this place being interesting?"

"Oh." River suddenly felt stupid, and that happened very rarely. She didn't like the feeling at all. Being a child prodigy had its disadvantages, but knowing more about everything than everyone else wasn't one of them. She decided to change the subject, but made a mental note to talk to Zoe about this. Different timeline? That didn't make sense.

"Yes. Interesting. What workshops have you chosen?" River tried to smile again.

"There's a lot of weird time things going on at this place," Kaylee said with a shrug.

The workshops. That was a less brain hurting topic. "Arts and Crafts, Astronomy and that Dadaism one. How 'bout you?"

That cheered her up. "I chose Applied Dadaism too! And Image and How to be an entertainer. Things I know very little about." The whole point of going here was the opportunity to do things she hadn't done before. Perhaps even be someone else?

"Dadaism sounds like fun," Kaylee said. "And I like Arts and Crafts. Don't know much about Astronomy, but it deals with space. And space reminds me of Serenity."

"I miss Serenity," River admitted, knowing that Kaylee must feel that even stronger. "I miss Simon too. But it's good to have you here." She felt that strongly now.

"Hope they can keep her runnin' without me," Kaylee said seriously. She thought about what River said about Simon. Kaylee sure did miss him, too. "I'm glad you're here too. Makes it feel a little like home, you know?"

[Going afk for about an hour. :)]
