The roof, Thursday night

Bel was feeling emo. As he was wont to do under such circumstances, he headed to the roof for a cigarette. Leaning against the railing, he stared at the cloudy sky, lost in thought.

Ellie headed up to the roof to check the skies in vain. It wasn't raining at the moment, but it was still too cloudy to observe.

She smelled smoke and looked around in annoyance. Spotting the culprit, she crossed her arms and said, "I hope you're quitting that bad habit soon."

Bel looked irritably at the intruder. "Not planning on it anytime soon," he said.

"Well, you're not going to be able to do it up here much longer," Ellie insisted. "When my telescope is built I won't have smoke near it. It might damage the lens."

"Oh, come on," Bel said, swinging his arm out. "It's a big roof."

"Why don't you go smoke in your room?" Ellie asked.

"Because my girlfriend would vanquish me?" Bel said.

"Vanquish you? Is that some new term for breaking up?"

"Yeah, something like that," Bel said, taking a drag off his cigarette. "So who are you anyway?" he said as he exhaled.

"Dr. Ellie Arroway," she said. "I'll be teaching astronomy at the school. Hence the telescope."

"I think Phoebe mentioned running into you in the park," Bel said, flicking ashes to the roof.

"Ah, and she's the one who'll 'vanquish' you?" Ellie said. "Smart girl."

Bel sighed. "Look, I can't smoke in my room, I'm not going to be an asshole and smoke in the common room, and if I smoke outside the front of the dorms I get glared at because, you know, smoking means you're evil. Can't I have the roof? There's a couple of us who use it, you know."

"Good to know it was more than one person responsible for all the butts up here," Ellie said. "If you clean up after yourselves and stay away from the telescope, fine, they're your lungs."

"Thanks, teach," Bel said, flashing her a charming grin. "I'm Belthazor, by the way. Demon from the underworld, just to get that out of the way right away."

Ellie took an involuntary step back. "Demon?"

"Half," Bel said. "Trying to change my ways. Don't worry, I won't hurt you."

"I didn't think you would," Ellie said. "Are you from this world? Where is the underworld?"

Jamie wanders up to the roof to get a breath of fresh air. "Oh. I'm sorry. Did you want to be alone?"

Bel shrugged. "It's okay," he said. He peered at Jamie. "I keep seeing you everywhere I go."
