Stickbug Campfire - Afternoon

It's too hot for a fire, but the shade from some nearby trees and cooler full of drinks still makes the Stickbug campfire a very nice place to be.

Actually it would be a nice place to be anyway because Stickbugs rule.

But everyone knows that.

Jamie is sitting back enjoying a cool beverage and reading a book, but is immensely botherable.

"I . . . also tried out for cheerleading." And the less said about that, the better. I mean, she knows how to do a good Russian accent, so, buh? "And spent most of yesterday just bumming around ~~while my mun went and got a life for a day~~." She shook her head. "Why did you go to every showing?"

"Haven't you ever seen a movie that is so bad that you have to watch it again and again just to heckle it?" Jamie asked. "It's a very worthwhile thing to do."

"I can't say I have." Nadia took a seat. "So I've been meaning to ask you, why the Meerkats?"

"Why the Meerkats?" Jamie said as he scratched his head looking a little puzzled. "Not sure exactly. I think it's because a couple of the guys in our cabin have a 'thing' for the girls over at Meerkat. Why do you ask?"

"Just curious." Nadia shrugged. "Those guys do know that there are better ways to get a girl's attention than putting ducks in their cabin and exploding cheesecake on them, right?"

"There are? I mean... yeah, I knew that," Jamie said quickly correcting himself. "But just on the offhand chance that there are additional idea's of getting a girl's attention maybe you should tell me so... I can pass them along."

"Well, talking to them is generally an approved method of getting attention, you know, saying 'hi' in a friendly way and generally being nice? And some girls really like when a guy is a gentleman," there might have been a slight blush with that statement. "Thoughhhhh . . . once you've done the ducks and cheesecake method, that might just make the girl really paranoid."

"What about rum? Is rum a good method?" Jamie asked. "And what if a certain girl wasn't paranoid? Just out curiousity."

"Rum for you or rum for her?" Nadia tilted her head. "And, well, for the sake of curiosity, if the girl isn't paranoid than you should definitely go the gentlemanly route. Unless she yells at you for assuming she can't open doors just because she's a girl. Then you should be a gentleman without opening doors for her."

"Rum for... everyone?" Jamie suggested. The pirate hadn't been too clear on that part. "So the gentlemanly route... doors not withstanding, that's just basically using really good manners around that person right?"

"Pretty much. Just be nice and polite and put her needs before yours." That sounded like a better plan in her head. "And rum is good. Maybe. Where'd you get the rum idea from? And this all really comes down to the girl. Because girls are different. From each other."

Jamie wasn't taking any mental notes. Not at all.

"The rum idea? Um. Heard about it on the radio," Jamie said.

Well, it wasn't completely a lie.

"So really there could be a girl out there who didn't like a gentleman."

"Yes." Nadia shrugged. "But in general, girls do like gentlemen. So be gentlemanly unless she tells you not to? If you keep doing something after she says she doesn't like it, then you're in trouble."

"So basically you're telling me that a guy should do whatever a girl tells him to do?" Jamie asked with a slight frown. "Where's the fun in that?"

Nadia rolled her eyes. "Not everything a girl tells him to, just the really nice stuff." The duh was unspoken, but certainly there. "Oh! But some girls like guys who are dangerous and enigmatic. So you could try that, too."

"Enigmatic, huh?" Jamie said thoughtfully. "Man of mystery kind of deal. Interesting idea."

Nadia nodded. "They like a mystery, because then they get to . . . discover you. Sort of." She paused. "But the most important thing, of course, is just to be yourself." She might have said this last bit like it was some rote advice that has to be given.

"What if you're not sure of who you are?" Jamie asked looking a little disturbed at this.

Nadia thought about this. "Um, then I guess go for the gentleman thing or the mystery thing? I don't know." She peered at him. "Aren't you really, like, 35, though? You should know all this stuff."

Jamie might have flushed a little. "Did I mention the part where I was living on a farm? Isolated from all humanity until I was 21? Kind of put a whole damper on the dating scene."

Nadia wanted to point out that Jamie still had a good 14 years after that to learn about dating . . . but decided to let it go--

"So, what girl are you interested in, then?"

--in favor of what could potentially be a much more embarrassing (and therefore, entertaining) topic.

"A gentleman does not say such things aloud as it would be uncouth to speculate one's desires," Jamie said as he shifted uncomfortably.

"A gentleman doesn't shove ducks into people's cabins and then give them exploding cheesecake," Nadia pointed out with a smirk.

"Allegedly shoved ducks into people's cabins," Jamie pointed out. "I was just dancing in front of the cabin with my shirt off."

Technically? Also true. Gotta love being a mutant.

"Besides who I am interested is my own business. I say something out loud and some shrub is going to pick up on it and that will lead to public humliation. I got enough of that when I was glittered and had to go to the principal's office to get my underwear."

Okay, the mention of the glitter and underwear set Nadia giggling, and distracted her quite well from pressing the "who are you interested in" question.
