Second Floor Common Room [evening]

After leaving the gym and handwave stopping by the library to do some cleaning, Rory settled onto a couch in the second floor common room with a stack of books she'd unearthed.

There were several old, fascinating books that she had found tucked away in a back corner in the old librarian's office, covered with a light layer of dust. So she sat still with a book on Celtic symbology open on her lap, carefully sounding out the words.

Ooh. Second floor common room.

Anakin walked in and settled on the couch next to Rory. "What have you found to read now?" he asked.

"Books," Rory replied, carefully sounding out foreign words and tracing her finger over the symbols.

"I got that part," Anakin said, grinning. "I'll even go out on a limb and guess old books."

He closed his eyes and sighed. "It's good to be back in the dorms," he said.

Hamlet wandered into the common room, glad to be back in the familiar settings of the dorms. He wandered down to the second floor common room, and was surprised to see it almost empty.

"I take it everyone's too glad to be ack in their own rooms to be celebrating?"

"Not me. A room's a room and a bed's a bed. I'm just glad to have TV back." He grabbed the remote control and started to flick through channels.

Hamlet dropped himself on to a couch. "Is there anything good on this evening? There was supposed to be a Bitterwoman marathon on, but I'm unsure if we missed it while camping or not."

"Presumably," Rory replied, looking up and taking in the mostly-empty room for seemingly the first time. "Works for me, though. The quiet's nice after living with seven other people for two weeks."

"My cabin was actually fairly quiet most of the time out. I did hear, however, that you and your cabinmates got into some very interesting adventures."

Callisto waved at Hamlet as she flopped on a couch. "Hey."

He waved back and grinned. "Hey. Do I get to keep my boots this evening?"

Alec found a common room with people and dropped into an empty seat with a long sigh. "Hello dorms, goodbye cabins."

"You'll miss them?" Rory asked with distaste, glancing up.

"They were fun," Alec said, smiling a little. "Even if they're a bit more like what I'm used to for living situations."

Parker came in and collapsed on a chair on the opposite side of the room from Rory and Anakin. She didn't look in their direction, and seemed to be dividing her concentration between the book Liz had loaned her, and the television.

"Hey, Parker," Alec said in greeting, with a wave. "Glad to be away from nature again?"

"God, yes," Parker said feelingly. "No more boots unless I have to fr a while, both my Tuesday workshops are in the Danger Shop, privacy and good television reception, and hot water that never goes away." She grinned. "How about you? Happier, sadder, more of the same?"

WTF Book?

Rory, in the midst of all conversation, had picked up a book with Egyptian hieroglyphics. It may have looked somewhat similar to this (http://pics.livejournal.com/rory__gilmore/pic/000406b5), in fact. But not exactly the same. For one thing, we don't have the weird little locky thing. Plus if it was that expensive and old-looking she would have NEVER taken it out of the library omg.

As she had been doing with all the other books, Rory opened it, and smiled as she found a small passage (http://pics.livejournal.com/rory__gilmore/pic/0003zar5) that she could sort of read.

"Ahm kum Ra. Ahm kum Dei," she began softly. She murmured a little more Egyptian as she traced fingers over the characters, and smiled as she finished. The wind picked up outside for just a moment, and if there had been a soundtrack, the dramatic music would have cued. But then the wind died again, and it's very likely no one really noticed the difference.

"It's a nice little story about the night and day," she told no one in particular. "I think. My ancient Egyptian's not very good."

Her pronounciation wasn't very good either. This couldn't possibly have any negative effect when reading aloud from an ancient book that beared a remarkable resemblance to the Book of the Dead, right?

Kawalsky looked up from the couch. "Nothing about gods with glowing eyes or anything, right? Just...wondering. Y'know."

"No, just...night and day, and something about Ra. Yay sun god!" Rory declared.

Hamlet looks over from watching TV to see what exactly Rory's reading, totally oblivious to any sudden changes in weather or stirring string-heavy background music that might have just gone on.

"Is that from special collections? I haven't seen a book like that around the school before."

"No, SC books aren't allowed out of the library," Rory replied pensively. "I found it when I was cleaning earlier. Languages are a hobby."

Parker might have twitched when Rory started to read aloud, then maintained an unimpressed silence. She sent a sideways glance toward th book, and not recognizing it, went back to watching television.
