The Roof -- Sunday Afternoon

After cheerleading practice, Phoebe had slipped quietly out of the gym and had decided to go up to the roof. She usually found a lot of solace there and she could sometimes think things out up there.

She sat in one corner of the roof with her back against the bricks and stared out over Fandom in silence. There were a lot of questions in her mind and too few answers to satisfy her.

Piper wasn't about to spend the entire day in her room when it was so nice outside. So she wandered up to the roof, not expecting to find Phoebe there.

"Hey Pheebs," she greeted. She was concerned when she noticed that her sister seemed quiet. "Are you okay?"

Phoebe smiled slightly. "Hey, Piper. I guess I'm okay. Just thinking is all."

"Got a lot on your mind?" Piper asked curiously.

Phoebe nodded. "Yeah, I guess I do."

"Well, I'm here if you want to talk about anything."

Phoebe held out a hand to her.

"I know, Piper."

[absolutesnark]

"You might feel better if you talk about it," Piper added. She was in concerned older sister mode right now.

"Cole..."

[absolutesnark]

"Oh," Piper said quietly. "Is this about what you talked to me about at the luau?"

Phoebe nodded.

"Is he still not talking to you?"

[sensethevisions]

Phoebe shook her head slightly. "He talks about the usual things... but none of the things that are botheruing him."

"Well, that doesn't make sense," Piper said, shaking her head. "Do you have any idea what could be bothering him?"

She was really starting to wonder what he is hiding from her and why.

Lana wandered up to the roof, wanting to feel the fresh air and see the stars without anything between her and them. She was a little surprised to see Phoebe up there. "Hey, Pheebs."

She went over and sat down quietly next to her. "How's it going?"

"Miserably, thanks." Phoebe's eyes widened. "What the hell did I say that for?"

"Maybe you've finally decided to trust me?" Lana asked. Which wasn't the way she'd planned for that to come out of her mouth.

Phoebe's eyes widened in shock at that.

"I do trust you! I just don't want to hurt you! And I sure as hell trust you a lot more than Cole trusts me."

Phoebe slapped her hand over her mouth.

"It hurts when you try and hide things from me, even if you are just trying to protect me," Lana said. "Unless you're hiding things because you really don't want me in your life, which is what I'm starting to worry about. And Cole loves you. I'd give anything to have someone love me like that!" Her eyes widened in shock.

"Lana you know that's not true! It's just that I don't want to drag you down with me when I ruin things and you know I will." Phoebe tried to stop talking. "I know Cole loves me but he doesn't trust me to talk to me, but he'll talk to others and that makes it a problem."

She might have whimpered and shook her head. "Just because I don't tell you everything and try to shield you doesn't mean I don't want you in my life. If you really believe that then you don't know me at all."

The ground never opens up and swallows you when you really want it to.

"I just get scared," Lana said. "I'm scared all the time that you'll leave or realize how useless I am and you won't want anything to do with me. Everyone leaves me and I know somehow it's all my fault - no matter what anyone says. I'm just not *enough* for anyone to want to stay with me or I curse them somehow so they die or get pulled away."

"You think that I never feel like I'm good enough?" Phoebe shook her head. "You don't think I'm scared I'm going drive you away or fail you and because of who I am you're going to get killed?"

Shut up. Stop talking.

"You're not the only person that feels everybody leaves her. Cole is pulling away. Most of my friends have left. My big sister is leaving in a month or two and I am not going to be able to be as great of a friend or sister to Paige as she has been to us!"

Please, stop talking.

"Of course, I know that! Why do you think I feel like I can be open with you? We are so much the same in some ways. But you - you're pretty and smart and everyone loves you and you have Cole and two great sisters. If I didn't love you so much I'd be pull-your-hair-out jealous!" Please, no more.

Phoebe just stared at Lana in shock.

"I never realized you felt like that," she said quietly. "And here I've been so jealous of you because you're sweet and pretty and so smart and so many things I'm not!" Panic may have started filling her eyes as she talked. "You're normal and not magical and everything I want to be and you're still my friend. With everything that happens I keep waiting for you to run away screaming because my life and messed-up destiny is more than you want to know about."

"Me?" Lana looks shocked. "What do I have? An aunt who doesn't care. A guardian who's far more interested in his multi-billion dollar business than he'd ever be in me... Almost all my friends are gone except you and Cole and you two have each other so you don't really need me. What do I care about your messed up destiny? You're what I care about."

She looked close to tears. "My destiny probably just involves being killed by some freak meteor mutant one of the times I go home. You're may be terrible, but at least you know you'll be helping people. And you have your sisters and your grams and Cole and me."

Please, please, she couldn't take much more.

Phoebe had tears welling in her eyes.

"You have me and Cole and Maia and there are other people that care about you here! Yeah, I have Cole, who won't even talk to me anymore." Phoebe wiped a hand across her eyes. "I do need you Lana. You're my best friend... you're family. You're aunt and guardian are obviously losers and Shep and Han shouldn't have abandoned you!"
