[The Roof, Thursday Night]

Alec was up on the roof, because a) mostly secluded, b) it was cooler outside than inside, and c) kitty likes high places it was easier to think with no distractions.

He was beginning to think the whole introverted/thinking deeply thing was overrated though. Way too much crap he really didn't want to deal with, really. Maybe he should just go claim an empty common room and veg out in front of the television instead. He wasn't quite ready to leave yet, though.

After a quick handwavy trip into town to obtain what he was now carrying, Dean went in search of Alec. The roof was the second place he looked, right after his room.

"Thought I might find you up here."

Alec smirked, looking back at his double. "I don't try to be a creature of habit, but you found me." He nodded at Dean's burden, curious. "Whatcha got there?"

"Chocolate milkshakes," Dean said with a grin, handing one over.

"Milkshakes," Alec repeated, taking the one offered and looking at it oddly. "What's this - a prize for not mangling your body while I was in it?"

Dean shrugged. "I just had a sudden yearning for something sweet so I went into town and picked these up." He paused and continued on a bit more hesitantly, "What you said about drinking lots of milk -- I thought this might help in the same way. And it's chocolate."

Alec sipped it cautiously, wrinkling his nose when he had to suck harder than he'd thought he would to pull anything through the straw. "Man, that's thick." He tried another sip, tilting his head as he considered. "Not bad though." See how he conveniently ignored the reference to milk products - very crafty.

"It's thick because there's ice cream in it," Dean explained, grinning at Alec's reaction to it.

"A couple of things. Sammy might not, but I understand why you didn't say anything or warn me before I had a seizure. Doesn't mean I'm not still a little pissed that you didn't at least try something like coming up with some bs story to get me to take the pills before it happened, but I understand.

"Secondly," Dean met and held Alec's gaze, "I know now, so you've got someone to guard your back when you can't."

"Fucking hell," Alec said, exasperated. "You think I haven't been doing this all my life already? On my own? I don't need anyone to watch my back on this."

Dean cocked his head. "You know what I said yesterday about that you could fucking deal with the fact that I care? You can fucking deal with the fact that I'm going to watch your back too."

Alec shook his head stubbornly. "No. Just leave it alone, Dean," he said heatedly. "You don't need to know and I'm not telling."

"All right," Dean said with a nod. "Let me put it this way, you can either tell me or you can get used to me practically living in your back pocket all the time until you do. If you don't give me any information, I'm just going to assume that you could have one any time and watch you accoringly."

Alec stared at him, jaw clenched, as if measuring his resolve. "You don't think that'd be kind of suspicious?"

"And..." Dean began slowly, "you were looking for me yesterday because you were worried I hadn't taken any of those pills since we switched." He nodded to himself. "Right. Tell me about the pills."

Alec sighed. "Tryptophan. Amino acid that we have to take for the serotonin our brains don't produce. At Manticore they had something stronger - still didn't keep them away completely, but it was good stuff."

Dean muttered under his breath about scientists messing with people's brains and there was more than one curse word involved. "Tryptophan -- that's like what's in turkey isn't it?"

Smirking, he nodded once. "Yeah. In milk, turkey, chocolate... Least I don't have to eat something disgusting to get it."

"So the chocolate milkshake was a really good idea then, huh?" Dean asked with a brief flash of smile. "So the pills -- are they like food supplements or vitamins or something? Get them in any health food store?"

"Not where I come from," he said, grimacing. "Black market, or hope you can get connections somehow."

River wandered up on to the roof to look at the night sky. She had planned to just lie on her back and watch the stars, but then she noticed Alec. She still felt bad about making him nervous, but his reaction also provoked her. She wasn't evil after all.

River stared at Alec.

Alec was a bit raw from his conversation with Dean and turning to find this particular newcomer was not exactly how he'd been hoping to cap his night.

He stared back at River, tense and uncomfortable, somehow feeling like she could see through him with how vulnerable he felt.

"I don't WANT to make you upset," River finally said. "I'm not like those people you met before."

"I don't like having people poking around in my head without asking," he growled. "That kind of upsets me."

River shrugged. "Sorry, can't help that. Not doing it a lot. Not PARTICULARLY looking in your head. Not PARTICULARLY interested in you."

He paused, watching her warily. "Not that I'm trusting you exactly, but do you mean you're not doing it on purpose?" Alec wasn't sure if he liked that any better - and he did remember what she'd said, about his mind being "loud". "You're just-" He fumbled for a word momentarily, frowning. "You're just 'overhearing' me?"
