The roof, Monday night (after midnight until rather late)

Nadia lay on her back in the middle of the roof, staring up at the sky. Her hangover was, thankfully, long gone, and the ache in her shoulder seemed to be heading off to find it.

For once, she didn't have any music or her guitar or any brownies of anything up here, she was just lying on her back and staring up at the sky and letting her mind wander to whatever places it might go in its . . . wandering.

Or she might be taking a nap with her eyes open.

Cally had been having trouble sleeping, so for some strange reason a late night tune-up of the Viper seemed like a brilliant idea.

So Cally, in pajamas, her boots, and a tool belt, arrived on the roof. She blinked when she saw someone else up there.

"Oh, hi Nadia," she said.

"Hey, Cally." Nadia didn't move from her reclined position. "How are you?"

"Sleepless," Cally said. "You?"

"Back from work. Don't feel like going back to my room yet."

"Oh," Cally said, sitting down next to where Nadia was lying. "Hard day?"

"Not really. People showed up, which was nice. I just wanted somewhere not my room to do some thinking."

"You want me to leave you alone?" Cally asked. "I came up to do some minor tuning on the Viper, but that can wait if you want it quiet."

"Nah, it's okay. Like I said, I'm used to people and noises. I'm from a big city."

"But you wanted to think," Cally pointed out. She paused. "Can I ask what about?"

"I realized today that July 4th marked the sixth month anniversary of me coming here."

"Six months, huh?" Cally said. She had pulled out a socket wrench and was fiddling with it in her hands. "That's a long time."

"It's longer than I've lived in one place in five years."

"Wow," Cally said. "You must've moved a lot," she said.

After Cally

After his phone call from Arthur and a brief talk with Alphonse, Walter had left his room for a walk, that, given his mood, inevitably led him to the roof.

He both was, and was not surprised to see Nadia there.

"Hey you. Are you alright?" He felt a pang that she probably wouldn't be happy with his news.

"I'm okay. Just wanted to come up here and think a little bit." Nadia tilted her head to look at him. "Did you notice? Tomorrow is July 4th."

"I noticed." Walter sat down next to her and pulled out a cigarette. "Isabel reminded me last week, since I don't really pay attention to American holidays."

"No, not that. The fourth day of July. Exactly six months since we got here."

"Oh. I didn't think of it that way." He sighed, thinking about that. "It's been a memorable six months."

"Yeah. It really has. Seems like longer. And shorter at the same time."

"I would think longer, if I had to say." He took a drag off his cigarette and took the plunge.

"I had a call from my employer tonight."

"Did he sign you up for workshops again?"

"I didn't think to ask," Walter admitted. "He was calling me home."

It took a moment for that to sink in. Then Nadia sat up abruptly.

"When?"

"Tomorrow, late." He reached out to her. "Just for a week, maybe a little less, maybe a little more."

Nadia pulled her knees up to her chest, but otherwise became outwardly calm. "To do what?"
