The roof, Wednesday evening

Nadia lay on the edge of the roof on a towel with one of the books from the library open in front of her. She knew from her conversation with Alfred that she wasn't likely to find any details about Walter's mission itself in the books, but at least she could get an idea of the area he was getting into. And maybe a better idea of where he came from, in general.

The ideas she was getting weren't pretty. But then, she'd learned early on that a lot of things in life weren't.

Distractions would, of course, be entirely welcome.

"Good," Cally said. "Have you gotten a chance to test out the motor yet?"

"I gave it a whorl when I installed it, but I haven't taken it out for a serious trip yet. Worked great though!"

"It's brilliant!" she said. "So how've you been besides having a sucky flying thing?"

"Doing pretty well," Cally said. "Friends are being super nice, and Anders and I are on the road to bein' friends again, which is good."

"How about you? Anything super exciting?"

"River and I are building a raft!"

"Why do you need a raft when you already have a boat?" Cally asked.

"Yes, it's a very good boat, with a very good engine. But building a thing is half the fun." she said. "Besides, River wanted to build a raft, and we can't take my boat onto the duck pond."

"Of all people, I should realize that building it is most of the fun," Cally said. "Silly me."
