Marie spent the majority of the day hiding in her room. She was avoiding talking about last night packing for the two week trip to the cabins.

Now that she was comfortably ensconced in Alcove B4, she decided to be brave sociable and start a campfire.

"Wouldn't dream of being anything else," Joxer said. "Faithful, I mean. If there wasn't Kaylee I could dream about you, I think. But I can't, since, you know, girlfriend, and oh, isn't this log made of wood? I think it is." He knocked on it with his knuckles. "Yes, definitely wood."

"That's good to know," Marie said, not touching the rest of Joxer's stream of consciousness.

"Always, yes," Joxer said, with a slight cough. "So who was the dumb jerk who screwed up trying to date you?"

"Conner," Marie said, figuring it was no secret and had probably been on the radio, not that she'd listened.

"He's the guy who made fun of my ball volley skills," Joxer said. "Well, him and my own teammate, actually."

"Your own teammate made fun of you?" Marie asked, outraged. "Who's that?"

"Some guy named Anders," Joxer said. "Never really met him before."

Marie's eyes narrowed. "That's just mean," she declared. "He's a jerk."

Yeah, she may have other reasons for thinking that, skewed as they might be.

Joxer nodded. "Didn't exactly lead us to victory," he said. "But enough of this unhappy stuff," Joxer said. "I'm thinking you need something specialer than shared water to cheer you up."

"I'm doing better," Marie said. "Really. He apologized and everything."

"Well, then I won't have to go beat him up for slandering your honor," Joxer said. "Unless you want me to. Then I can overlook the apologizing."

"It's sweet of you to offer," Marie said. And yeah, she meant it. "But that's okay."

Joxer nodded. "Well, then I'm not sure what else I can offer to cheer you up," he said. "I don't have my lute so I can't sing you a song."

"You know what? You helped a lot by listening," Marie told him.

Joxer looked slightly surprised. "I did?"

Marie nodded. "Yeah."

Joxer looked proud of himself. "Well, glad I could help."

"I think I'm going to go in now," Marie said, banking the fire so it would burn out without spreading. "But thank you."
