Main campfire, Saturday morning

Rizzo, sitting on top of one of the picnic tables by the unlit fire, leaned back and folded her legs in the tight black dress she had found in her closet this morning. Loose t-shirts and those jeans? So not her style. Why she even had them, she didn't know. She had woken up with the worst craving for a cigarette, a need she was now satisfying with a long drag and relieved exhale. She held the cigarette loosely in one hand, leaning back on the other as she surveyed the goings-on around her with an amused little smile, sunglasses perched on top of her head at the moment.

"No one said it was all anyone would be interested in. But no one's gonna see your brains before they talk to you," Frenchy argued.

"But I don't care," she argues back.

Frenchy just boggled. "Why not?"

"There are much more important things than appearances, and if the people who put all their time into looking good took a single ounce of that and put it into something actually worth the time, maybe they could actually achieve something worthwhile," she says.

Not that she's ever gone off on Parvati and Lavender about this, nope.

"I'm achievin' something worthwhile right now," Frenchy pointed out. "This is what I wanna do, and to me it's totally worth it."

"Since when?"

"Since always! I'm gonna drop outta high school to go to beauty school an' everything."

Hermione stares at her.

The staring is followed by a high-pitched "WHAT???"

"I'm gonna be a beautician!" She held up a lock of her hair. "I think I'm gonna go red today."

"WHY?"

You'd think she was channeling Harry.

"Why not?" she asked, blinking vapidly. "Brown's kinda boring."

"There's nothing wrong with brown!" Hermione says. "You're going to drop out of school? No! I mean... no! Why?"

"I'm not thinkin' of it as dropping out. It's a career move," Frenchy replied.

"This makes no sense. What if it doesn't work out?" Hermione asks. "You can't wait, what, a year to give yourself a diploma so at least you have some sort of backup? I expected better of you!"

"I gotta start early!" she insisted. "This way, I'll get outta beauty school really soon, an' then I'll have customers lined up 'round the block an' probably my own salon before I'm twenty!"

"But that's not realistic! You'd have to be able to support youself, and then actually have money in order to get your own salon. You can't do that in three years!"

"I'll have backers," she assured her. "I'll get people to invest or somethin'!"

"You can't count on that," Hermione counters. "Who would your investors be? Do you have any idea, or are they just mystery people that might show up down the line?"

"My parents and friends! Maybe the principal. She likes me," Frenchy said, smiling shyly.

Hermione stares at her. "Your friends are the same age you are!"

"Nuh uh, Danny an' Rizz are eighteen already!" she pointed out. "Not sure 'bout Kenick, but I think he might be too. They'll invest!"

"Who are these people?" Hermione asks, because she hasn't even heard the names on the radio.

Frenchy pointed at the dark-haired girl smoking a little ways from her. "There's Rizzo, and Kenickie's makin' eyes at her as usual. No idea on what Danny's doin' with himself."

Hermione stares. "Have you all gone insane?" she wonders. "Is that what happened?"
