2nd floor common room, afternoon

This week was just weird. So Cameron had gathered all the needed ingredients and headed back to the dorms to use the kitchen in the 2nd floor common room to make brownies. It couldn't be that much harder from chocolate cake, could it?

((Am unexpectedly getting dragged out of the house. AFK for a couple of hours, but I'll pick up as soon as I get home. Back.))

"Was really close," Cally said with a nod. "And I'm super protective of 'em to begin with, so it was kinda scary."

"I'll try to hold off on the sugar. I'm pretty sure I got the dosage right," Cameron glanced at the recipe. At least he was good at following orders.

"I'm sure you're doin' great," Cally said. She stretched her arms out a bit. "Gah. Hey, you're somewhat good with the athletic stuff, right?"

"Depends what sort of athletic stuff, but I guess," he frowned a bit. "Why?"

"Tryin' to start to get a hang of some self-defense stuff," Cally said. "You know, fightin' skills and all that. Get a headstart on basic, and all."

"Okay, that I do know a bit. I've been helping Veronica out," Cameron replied. "I think Alanna did a self-defense club for a while too."

Cally nodded. "Yeah. Nadia was gonna help me out, but then she, well, you know. Got some basic pointers from Pip yesterday, though. Just figure asking everybody wouldn't hurt, you know? See what everybody has to say and stuff."

"Yeah, I heard about that Nadia," Cameron considered it. "It's definitely a good idea to ask around. There's some people who kow all different kind of styles around here. I'd offer to teach you, but I'm not sure I've got the time as I'm already helping Veronica out. I got some books from self-defense class that you can borrow, though."

"That'd be nice," Cally said. "Thanks."

"Cool, I'll look for them later," he grinned. "Are you preparing for the next invasion or are you out to kick someone's ass?"

"Like I said, getting a headstart on basic," Cally said. "If I'm joining the fleet after I graduate, might as well be ready for it. Plus, you know, helps me to think of myself as more independant and stuff, which is a plus."

Cameron paused. "I didn't realise you were interested in joining the fleet. That's the Colonial military, right?"

"Well, I'm not, really? But it's about the only way I'll ever pay for dental school," she said. "Plus, following in my father's footsteps. Erm, footstep."

"Ah. Having money is always nice," he looked at her. "Footstep?"

"He lost a foot in a deck accident," Cally said.

Cameron winced in sympathy. "Ouch. What happened? It's okay if you don't want to talk about it," he added quickly.

"He never really liked talking about it," Cally said. "It was something involving a set of Viper shell casings that were supposed to be empty, and an overheating welder. That's about all the details I ever got."

Cameron nodded. "Dad's can be stubborn."

Cally laughed. "It's about the only thing he's ever stubborn about, actually. My dad's pretty frakking awesome."

"Hey, even if they're stubborn they can be awesome," Cameron smiled. "I guess we'll both be following or dad's example after this."

Cally nodded. "For a year or two, at least," she said.

"And then being a dentist," he tilted his head. "I'm not sure if it's practical to have a dentist on another world."

"How come? We Colonials all have teeth like you Earth folks, you know."

"Yeah, but the travel costs would be higher than the actual appointment," he pointed out.

Cally laughed. "Well, I wasn't exactly thinking about setting up shop here. Or. . . okay, now I'm confused."
