Fourth Floor common room, Wednesday evening

Dean was ensconced in front of the tv, plenty of unhealthy snacks within easy reach. On the tv was something with a lot of car chases and explosions. Perfect for mindless viewing.

"Hey, Cally," Conner said, waving at her with his non-burned arm.

Cally's eyes bugged. "Ow?"

"It's not that bad," Conner said quickly. "Just hurts to sleep on that side."

"What happened?"

"Fire?" Conner said weakly.

Cally eeped. "I don't like fire."

"It's not fun, yeah," Conner agreed.

"Who set you on fire?" Cally asked.

"Nobody set me on fire!" Conner looked at her very, very strangely. "I was in one."

"Why?"

The strange look got ten times stranger. "It's not like I ran into it on purpose -- okay, I did, but not for fun or anything."

"I repeat my previous question," Cally said, raising an eyebrow.

Conner sighed and gave up on trying to evade the question. "Would you leave two little kids trapped in a burning house?"

Okay, mostly gave up on trying to evade the question.

Cally didn't even want to think about that, and just shuddered. "Is that what you did?"

Conner just nodded.

"Pretty brave of you," Cally said.

"Nah," Conner replied. "Tell you the truth I was scared out of my mind, when I thought about it afterward. But I couldn't not do it."

"I woulda froze up and did nothing," Cally said. "You're totally brave, in my book."

"It's just what I do," Conner replied modestly. "But thanks. Sometimes you never know what you're capable of until you're actually in that situation, so hey, don't sell yourself short, okay?"

"I'm only five foot six," Cally said. "Any shorter and I wouldn't be able to enlist."

"Enlist?" Conner asked, surprised.

"Okay, everybody gives me that reaction," Cally said. "Yeah. I'm joining my planet's military after I graduate. Maybe before, if I can work out still getting to finish high school."

"You guys aren't at war or anything, are you?" Conner frowned. "Sorry. I just kind of worry about anybody putting themselves in the line of danger, which is kind of dumb coming from . . ."

He indicated his burns. "You know."

"Heh. Like I told Z, we've not had a war in, like, 20 some years. It's perfectly safe. Nothing could possibly go wrong."

"Hey, we worry about people." Conner shrugged. "Guess it's a Ranger thing."
