Dean was ensconced in front of the tv, plenty of unhealthy snacks within easy reach. On the tv was something with a lot of car chases and explosions. Perfect for mindless viewing.

"S'how I like 'em," Cally said. "Though I really kinda am tryin' to cut down on the sweets, now."

"Any particular reason?" Dawn asked. "And they're good with fresh fruit, too."

"Gotta get in shape for basic," Cally said. "So I'm working on self defense stuff, and playing Pyramid with Anders."

"Basic what? And what's Pyramid?"

"Basic training. I'm enlisting after I graduate," Cally said. "And Pyramid's a sport, from the Colonies, where Anders, D'anna and I are from."

"You're enlisting?" Dawn's eyes widened. "Aren't you young to make that decision? I mean, er, good for you."

"I'm seventeen," Cally said. "It's not like I want to fire a gun or anything. It's just about the only way I'll manage to pay for dental school."

"I've never met anyone who wants to be a dentist before." Dawn thought about the repercussions, "and what are you going to do, if you don't want to fire a gun?"

"Basic deck crew enlistment is mostly just maintenance stuff. Also a lot of cleaning the decks, too."

"Do you know a lot about maintenance stuff?"

"I'm a bit of a gearhead, yeah," Cally said. "My dad was a Crewman Specialist, actually."

"I have no idea what that means," she said apologetically.

"Erm, sorry," Cally said. "Gearhead's just a way of saying 'I like messing with machines'. You know, tinkering and fixing and stuff. A crewman specialist, well, that's the job that I'll hopefully get into with the military."
