Friday Night Late - On The Roof

Phoebe had been heading up to the roof when she had gotten the call from Veronica. What V had told her just added to her confusion and paranoia. Someone was out to get them and for the life of her she couldn't figure out why, or who would do such a thing. Between yesterday and this morning, she was really beginning to think a visit to Locker #327 would be much less traumatic.

She got up on the roof and found a comfortable corner to think and watch the stars.

This week had been weird and painful.

Cole headed up to the roof early and waited for Phoebe. When he saw her arrive, he finished his cigarette, watching her silently for awhile. Then finally he approached her. "Hey, sweetheart," he said.

Phoebe looked up at him and smiled faintly. "Hey," she said softly. "Have a seat?"

He settled next to her. "Um, how was your day?" he said nervously.

"Missed you," she said quietly. "Had a scary premonition this morning." She swallowed.

"You okay?" he said, immediately concerned.

"Scared and paranoid, but so far no one has tried to hurt me...except for what they did to us yesterday."

"You know someone set that up?" Cole said slowly. "That . . . I wouldn't . . . not willingly. . . ?"

"Cole... you would never hurt me like that. I'm sorry I walked out yesterday, but it was... that was..." She looked worn out and sad. "It shocked me in a bad way. I've never seen anything like that and then it was you..." She bit her lip. "Veronica called me tonight before I came up here."

"I don't blame you for walking out," Cole said. "It must've hurt to see . . . that. What did Veronica tell you?"

"It did hurt and my brain and my emotions weren't talking. I knew you would never have... but the hurt and the shock." She sighed. "She thinks you guys were drugged and I was set up to find you guys like..."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Who could hate us that much... and who the fuck would do that to Blair of all people?"

"I don't know what happened with Blair," Cole said haltingly. "I can't remember anything. But whatever I did . . . it wasn't me." He frowned. "Don't know if someone has it in for you and me, but dragging Blair into it is just . . . wrong."

"He thought I wanted to kill him." She bit her lip. "I called him today, left him a message that I hoped calm his fears."

"That was nice of you," Cole said. "He must know you wouldn't hurt him."

"Him... no. You... no. Whomever has done this... I want them to bleed."

She shook her head.

"Someone is hurting the students here and it's not right. People are scared or worried."

"Dean told me somebody switched Alec's pills and that he nearly OD'd because of it," Cole said grimly. "These 'pranks' are getting worse and worse. Somebody's gonna get really hurt. You still don't have a clear idea from your premonitions?"

"He could have died!" She sighed. "No, they're very vague this time and I don't understand why."

He slipped his arm around her shoulders. "It's not your fault, sweetheart," he said. "The Elders work in mysterious ways I guess."

She leaned into his touch. "They're a bunch of asses then."

Marie finally made her way to the roof, tears still streaming down her cheeks after literally running into Walter (http://walter-n-wires.livejournal.com/39636.html?thread=816852#t816852) in the stairwell. She didn't understand how she could have been so wrong about Jamie.

After talking to Phoebe, Bel saw Marie run up on the roof. "Marie?" he called, walking toward her.

"Oh, hi," Marie said, looking up and seeing Bel.

"What's wrong?" Bel asked, seeing her tears.

Marie looked down. "I had a date with Jamie tonight."

"Didn't go well, I take it?" Bel said.

"No," Marie shook her head sadly. "He was nasty. And Walter said he's dangerous."

Bel tensed. "Nasty? Dangerous? Did he hurt you?"

"Not physically. He was mean."

Marie looked up at Bel, biting her lip. "He told me it was my fault he got hurt when those creepy, floaty guys were in town."

"I'm gonna kick his ass," Bel growled. He was already in a bad mood because of what had happened with Blair and this just added to it.

"There's no point," Marie said. "If you hit him, he just duplicates."

She tilted her head. "Although, when I slapped him tonight, he didn't. Weird."

"How about when I set him on fire?" Bel said.

Marie frowned. "That might be a little overboard, don't you think. I mean, I think it really was my fault he got hurt. He was looking for me to make sure I was safe."

"That doesn't make it your fault," Bel said. "And he's a jerk for telling you that. He needs to be taken down a notch."

"He was also upset about the fact that I didn't stand up to my parents about what happened back home when a girl in the next town found out she was a mutant," Marie shared.

"He made you cry," Bel pointed out, nearly admitting his other secret weakness. "I need to have words with him."
