The Roof, Wednesday Evening

Dawn was on the roof, reading as the sun went down, then just standing and feeling the wind and rain kick up. She loved the wild weather and energy before a storm, and who cared if she got a little wet?

She was spinning in circles as the rain started to fall.

Lyra missed the roofs of Jordan college, so much that even though it was raining, she climbed out one of the windows that had a ledge, and pulled herself up over the roof's edge.

It wasn't until she was already on the roof and soaked that she realized there was another person up there. Too bad it was too dark to see who.

"Uh, hullo?" she called.

Lyra stepped a tiny bit closer to the edge of the roof, just enough so that the lights from the ground lit her face.

"Lyra Belacqua. I don't think we've met."

Lyra held her hand out to shake. "Pleasure's mine."

She looked up at the clouds and blinked rain out of her face. "Sorry if I bothered you. I thought the roofs'd be deserted."

"I know what you mean." Lyra laughed. "Back at home, they don't credit me with much sense."

She looked around; the roof was hidden in shadow, mostly. "Is the roof a popular place to be?"

Lyrs was busy looking over the edge of the roof to notice the blush or hesitation. It was a dizzying height.

"Oh. It's a nice roof. Not as big as the one on Jordan College, though."

Nadia wandered up to the roof, for once without her guitar or any brownies.

The roof in the rain held very good memories, after all.

"Oh, hi, I didn't know someone else would be up here."

"Understood. It's nice that the heat is starting to die down, but I'm sad to see summer go."

"No, no." Lyra laughed again. "I grew up there, in Oxford. My un- my father left my there to be raised. They taught me some things, but nothing formal."

She looked back at Dawn, through the rain. "What about you, where did you grow up?"

"I like it up here. I come up to practice sometimes."

"California? That's here, right? In New Denmark. I mean, America."

Lyra, brushed water out of her eyes, moving over to sit on the parapet. "The scholars taught me lots of things, mostly, uh, physics, I think you call it. They were always supposed to tach me basic things," she smiled at the memory. "But somehow they always ended up lecturing me on their experiments."

Nadia smiled and shook her head. "I don't have my guitar with me. And I wouldn't mind if you listened, anyway."

"Not trying to, but it always seems to happen anyway."

"Though when you think about it, that just makes sense."
