The Roof// Friday Evening

Seras had, once again, spent the day in her room. However, rather then shivering under the covers, she'd merely been curled up in bed reading some of her favourite adventure novels.

Now, with her head full of deeds of daring do done by people more noble and lucky than they had any right to be, Seras climbed up onto the roof for some fresh air.

Growing up in either the city or in institutions who had a definite 'inside before dark' policy, Seras had yet to grow tired of gazing up at the stars.

She found a cozy place, took out a scarf she'd been knitting, and settled in to enjoy the show.

"Faster than light," Cally said. Basically the fastest sort of thing we've got.

"Wow...Do you havet to jump FTL often?"

"Not really," Cally said. "Usually only if you're going between really far colonies. And deep exploration, but no one's done that in ages."

"Wow...with a whole galaxy to explore, I wonder why not..."

"Well, there was this whole war thingy with the Cylons," Cally said. "That kinda put a stop to things for a bit."

"Oh. That's sad. Has the war ended?"

"Yeah, they went away," Cally said. "Haven't heard a peep from them in, like, decades."

Seras nodded.

"Well, when you're a dentist, you'll be able to keep two feet on the ground."

"But when I'm in the fleet for a year? I might end up jumping all the time." She scrunched up her face. "That's the only problem with it."

"Maybe you'll get used to it? Do you feel sick for very long, afterwards?"

Maybe Cally had an inner ear problem, or something.

"It's just a really, really, sick to my stomach sort of thing," she said. "Usually I can keep hold of my lunch, though."

Seras nodded.

"Do you at least get a warning before it happens?"

"Yeah, you do," Cally said. "It takes a lot of calculations and stuff to do them, cause it's moving so fast and you don't want to hit anything. So the whole ship has to brace for jumps."

Seras' eyes widened.

"Hit anything? At that speed? Right, I can see why you don't like it."

Cally smiled. "But I still have two long years here ahead of me before the fleet even gets to think about grabbing me."

Seras smiled back.

"Two long years to figure out how to make booze from potatoes. Maybe you should ask Al. He's the alchemist."

"Yeah, that might work. Agnes said she knows about stills, too," Cally said. She wiped her bangs out of her eyes. "I think I should go down to my room, actually. I'm just gettin' all wet up here."

"Good idea, actually."

Cally waved. "Seeya later, Seras. Have a nice rest of the evening."
