It had been entirely too long since Pippi had made entirely too many pancakes.

Actually she never made too many. People always showed up to eat them.

And the left overs were always delightfully ready to eat cold from the fridge.

"Mornin' Pippi," Cally said, wandering in, rubbing her eyes. "Ooooh, pancakes."

"Mornin' Cally." Pippi said, then looked down at her grittle. "Geehosiphat! They are pancakes!"

Cally giggled. "I hope you weren't tryin' to make something else."

Walter wandered in after an unsuccessful attempt at sleeping in and immediately put on a pot of water.

"Morning."

"Morning." Pippi nodded flipping some flap jacks. "How are you this morning?"

"I'm just going to smile and nod and secretly cross out where it says 'pickled herring' on the recipe card and write 'pancakes' over it."

"I'm good. I have a day without classes and I studied last night, so I don't have to do it today." He found a cup and sat to watch the pot. "How are you?"

"Fine. I'm fine." We're all fine. Here. Now. How are you? ... *blam* Stupid conversation anyway.

Cally grinned. "Well, if you don't want pancakes, I'm sure I could take some off your hands..."

Stupid pot wasn't boiling. "Now that I have you where I want you where I can talk to you, what is going on with River?"

"Hmmmm, I dunno... Ya think you're ready for this pickled herring... I mean pancake extravaganza? They're pretty overwhelmingly tasty."

"She's... She was in some place she called the 'Academy'. She said they did things to her to try and make her hurt people and make her be able to hear other people's thoughts." Pippi said looking down at her grittle. "She told me before that her brother had to rescue her from some place before she came here. I guess he did that before the Academy people finished what they were doing."

Walter scowled. "She attacked you, and Nadia, and Pip, Phoebe, Peter, Molly, and Blair of all people. Why? If she's that unstable, she shouldn't be free."

"Hey you," Cally said with a wave. "I almost got your present ready."

"She isn't, she's just sitting in the clinic where there's a sanctuary spell muttering to herself." Pippi said, her voice is clearly upset but she's not slamming things around like a person might do in a similer situation.

"We were walking through the park and I was thinking that it was a nice way to end the summer and better then the beginning. And we saw River and she said I was posessed and gunna hurt Nadia and I tried to explain that was a while ago and it was over, but she didn't believe me and then River just kinda shut down and it was like she was moving and doing stuff buttherewasn't anybody in there. And I tried to grab her and pull herawayro throwher in atreebuteverybodyjustsortof jumpedinandIdidn'tthinkIcoulddoanythingeffectivewithouthurtinganybody andIkepttryingtodosomethingbutIdidn'thaveroomtomenuveruntileverybodywasdownandthenMollyshowedup."

"Overwhelmingly, huh?" Cally said. "Well, you only live once, eh? Lay 'em on me."

Walter sighed and held out his arms to Pippi for a hug. "It's not your fault, but she's too dangerous to be allowed to be free."

Ironically, a familiar circumstance to him.

"Oh yeah." Walter smiled and finally got his watched pot off the stove. "I had such a good birthday, I wasn't thinking about presents. You can always wait until next birthday."

"How about I just hand them to you on a plate instead?"

"I guess they'd be easier to eat that way," Cally said. "And I wouldn't get syrup all over me. There is syrup, right?"

"Yeah right," Cally said. "I said I had something for you, it's just still in the works. Just hopefully the first batch isn't lethal."

Pippi cleaned the batter off her hands before carefully hugging her friend.

"I think it's going to take a lot of time for her to be able to manage it."

"I'm a guinea pig, am I?" Walter asked, laughing. "Are you trying potion making or something a little more practical?"

"No no no," Cally said. "Nadia and I need to rope Joxer and Pete up to the roof to be the actual guinea pigs. Assuming they live, you totally get the first bottle of Chateau de Viper."

"Then she needs some kind of outside restraint," Walter said, thinking of the controls on Alucard. "Or a minder. For everyone's protection, including hers."

Because the next time she hurt his friends....
