The gym, Friday morning

Aeryn's in the gym again today, a little earlier than she has to be, just to make sure she can warm up first. She gets the extra set of gloves from the locker and brings them back to the mat before dropping them and putting her own on. And then it's time for a quick one-on-one with the bag as preparation.

Luke walked into the gym a few minutes later, bright eyed despite the early hour. "Morning!"

She gives him a little smile. "You seem ready," she says.

"I like mornings," he replied. He swung his arms above his head and tried to get the blood circulating.

"How do you want to do this?" he asked.

"You can warm up if you want," she tells him, and really has developed a system for how she does this. "I see how you throw a punch, work on correcting that, and how far we get depends on how quickly you learn."

Luke went through a pretty quick warm-up, then walked over to where Aeryn was waiting, settled into a loose crouch and held his fists up.

He'd learned from watching friends get into barfights in Anchorhead, so his hands were right but his stance was wide, wide open.

"You need to tuck yourself in more," she tells him. "Close up so they don't have a chance to hit you."

Luke adjusted his stance. "Like this?"

She watches him, and nods. "Better. And we'll work on blocking, too," she tells him. "All right, now pretend you're going to hit someone."

Luke pressed his lips together, then swung out with his right fist.

It had some serious power behind it, but not a lot of focus.

"Try it against the bag," she suggests. "I want to see something."

Luke trotted over to the bag and repeated the punch.

"Okay, picture someone in front of you. When you try it this time, aim for this person's face," she says.

Luke narrowed his eyes and swung out, connecting with where his imaginary Vader's head would have been.

"Good," she tells him. "Can you do the same thing with your left?"

Luke repeated the movement but was obviously less comfortable with his left hand.

She waves him away from the bag, pretty sure she can tie this in together without a problem. She puts her hands up in a blocking position, and says, "Copy this stance."

Luke did so. "Like this?"

She nods. "When you're actually in a fight, they're going to be trying to hit you as much as you're trying to hit them," says Aeryn, to whom the concept of 'keeping them from hitting you until you can get away' has never occurred. "More than being able to hit them, you need to protect yourself. Now. Try to hit me."

Luke nodded, then aimed his right fist at Aeryn's chin.

Acting on instinct, he kept his left fist tucked close to his body.

Watching closely, Aeryn's able to knock the punch away, and drops her guard only a little. "All you have to do is knock them away," she says. "Ready to try?"

Luke nodded, putting his hands back up into the defense stance she had showed him. "Give it your best shot," he said.

Aeryn smirks at that, even though she's not going to seriously try to hit him. A little slower than usual, she aims a punch at Luke's jaw, but even if he missed, she wouldn't do any damage.

Billy came in a blue towel over his shoulder, and started to stretch.

Aeryn gives him a little nod, continuing on the bag.

Billy finished stretching, observing Aeryn on the bag while he finished up. She was good. He then proceeded smoothly into the moves of one of his more advanced katas.
