The Roof, Friday evening

John trudged up to the roof, thinking.

Not so much thinking as trying not to think. Trying not to think about the imposter professor, not to think about Syd, not thinking about everyone else who left.

Always leaving.

John stepped up on the ledge, toes hanging over.

Self-fulfilling prophesy said he'd live to defeat Skynet. Didn't say if he'd be directing from the battlefront or from a wheelchair.

He looked down at the ground 6 floors below. He hocked a loogie to see how long it took.

"That explains some of the things he said to me." And did add a very familiar context to some of John's behavior. "He needs someone keeping an eye on him."

"Yeah. But Sydney left. Who does he have?"

"That seems to be part of the problem. Not just Sydney, but Agatha, and her mother. He mentioned Aziraphale, though."

"Who's come back. That's something, at least."

"It's not if Aziraphale doesn't know that John's in this condition."

". . . yeah. But is it our place to let him know?"

"If he jumped off this roof without someone here to catch him...?"

"I know, I know. But I also know how he feels. Two people who don't know him that well, talking about him like that?"

Walter shrugged. "Which is worse?"

"If I'm reading the situation wrong? The second. Maybe I'm just . . . projecting. Because I've felt like that, before."

"I saw the same thing, though." He could live with himself if John did try to hurt himself and they hadn't told Aziraphale. He wasn't so sure about Nadia.

"I just don't know. I really don't know him very well. Just that he was dating my sister."

Walter shrugged. "I don't know him that well, either. I'm thinking my time here is making me soft."

"Empathy isn't really useful for my job."

"Well, it's not like you're becoming Blair. A little bit of empathy isn't a bad thing."

"Well-intentioned but not too smart at times, you mean?"

"He does have a tendancy to only look at things from one side."

"That's a tactful way to put it." It's entirely probable that Walter hadn't gotten past Blair's opinion that talking to Hitler would have prevented the war.

"Well, I do consider him a friend."

"I kept Alanna from hitting him and didn't hit him myself. He's either my friend or just too Blair to be hit."

"I've never known anyone else who could say something as offensive and not get punched. It must be the special Blair-ness."
