The Roof: Saturday Early Evening [9-30]

Lana crept quietly up to the roof, checking to make sure no one was there before going to sit near the edge and stare off into space. She made sure to sit well back from Bel's plants. She looked, well... terrible.

Lana started to cry again. "See, I can't even help you with a simple thing like that!"

That set Joxer off, and he started crying too. "We're hopeless," he said.

Lana patted him on the back. "We can be hopeless together."

Joxer nodded. "We'll be the best worst people on the planet," he said.

"I think we already are," she said, tearing up. "And you know, I went to Caritas last night to get drunk and Professor Tick was running the bar and all he would give me was chocolate milk."

"You know," Joxer said, looking back at the Viper. "That thing makes something... sorta drinkable. It hurts, but I think in a good way, now."

Lana looked over at the Viper. "I'm already hurting," she said. "And I'm willing to try pretty much anything."

"I don't have any cups," Joxer said. "Do you?"

"Maybe Bel has a watering can?" Lana suggested. "We could take turns."

"Wait," Joxer said. He pulled out his little flask/canteen and started pouring out the water. "I forgot about this."

"See!" Lana said. "Who said you were hopeless? Two great ideas in a row!"

That actually did start cheering Joxer up a bit. He wandered over to the Viper and found the valve, and started filling the flask.

"I guess I have moments," Joxer said.

"Lots of them," Lana assured him.

Joxer shut off the valve on the still and walked back over to Lana, offering the flask.

"Thanks," he said. "I still say you aren't cursed."

Lana took a sip and coughed violently. "Wow... harsh," she said. But she could feel the warmth start to spread. "Not bad, though. And maybe I'm not cursed, since you seem to be right about so much."

Joxer nodded. "And I think that whatever Jim did, he'll come right back to you," he said. "He'd have to be stupid not to."

Lana took another sip and then passed the flask over to Joxer. "I don't know," Lana said. "I really upset him."

Joxer took the flask and took a sip himself. "Wow... that's better than I remember," he said. "But... what could you possibly have done to do that?"

"I told him that I thought I was falling in love with him," Lana said morosely."

"That... what?" Joxer said. "That should've made him happy." He took big gulp and offered the flask back to Lana. "That woulda made me happy."

Lana drank again. Between the emo and the alcohol, she was starting to feel pretty lightheaded. "You want me to be in love with you?" she asked looking confused. "But what about Kaylee?"

Joxer stammered for a moment. "I, I, I, I," he started. "I don't know if she actually likes me, or just takes pity on me."

"She'd better like you!" Lana said fiercely. "You're my friend." She took another big sip and handed the flask back.

"I hope she does," Joxer said. "I really do."

"Jim doesn't like me anymore," Lana said and started crying again.
