The roof, Thursday afternoon

In order to show the people that she whined at yesterday that she was much better now, kthnxs (and to give Blair a chance to apologize, omg!), Nadia was stretched out at a jaunty angle on the roof with her legs propped up on the edge of Bel's garden, guitar in hands, playing something warm and cheerful at the cool, gray sky.

Shut up. Dar Williams could so be cheerful.

Every now and then she'd pause to partake of the thermos of coffee or box of chocolates she had with her.

Marie was starting to like hanging out on the roof. And she was pleasantly surprised to hear music when she made her way up there.

She sat near Nadia quietly and waited for her to finish, not wanting to interrupt her playing.

Nadia waved as she finished the song, then continued to idly play a simple sequence of syncopated notes just to keep her fingers busy and warmed up. "Hey, did you hear the announcements? Congratulations."

"Thanks, you too!" Marie grinned. "Good thing we found awesome handwavy dresses the other day."

"Well, we had some good things to choose from. Who knew Stuff for Sale had that kind of selection?"

Marie nodded. "I just hope that if I win I don't have to dance with anyone that isn't Jamie," she said. "I'd be worried that they wouldn't be careful."

"There is that. But we found a good dress, I think. You shouldn't have to worry too much,"

"I can't help but worry," Marie said. "But I'm way too excited about tomorrow night to dwell on it."

"That's good. Want me to help keep an eye out for you?" Nadia might have been imaging a sort of sneaky version of crowd control.

Marie was slightly confused at what Nadia was getting at. "I think it will be okay," she said. "Most everyone knows and I'll be wearing gloves and pretty much covered."

Nadia nodded. "Okay. Well, let me know if you need help on anything. Do you think Jamie has something romantic planned?"

"I appreciate that," Marie said. "And I have no idea what Jamie might have planned, but I'll be happy as long as he doesn't get in trouble. Do you think Walter has anything special planned?"

"If he does, he hasn't let me know. It took him until last week to ask me. But considering that I kind of went nuts on him last night, maybe I should do something for him."

Marie raised an eyebrow. "What did you do?"

"Went kind of crazy girly on him. Do you know he'd never even heard of a period before?"

"He hadn't?" There was a lot of blinking on Marie's part.

"Apparently. He kept thinking I had food poisoning."

"Oh wow." More blinking. "Did you have to explain it to him?"

"Sort of. It ended up with me just telling him he could either be grossed out and a jerk, or nice and helpful." Nadia gestured to her box of chocolates. "He made a good choice."

Marie smiled. "Yes he did. Lucky you."

"I admit, I was worried for a little while there. Feel free to have one, if you want. So . . . anything other than homecoming on your mind?"

"Thanks," Marie said, picking out a chocolate. "No, not really. I've been keeping busy with classes. Trying to be social and not just hide in my room."

She shrugged. "What about you?"

"About the same, though you can throw being somewhat crazy in there, I guess. I was helping out on Blair's Damn the Man club, but I don't think I'll be doing that any more."

"Why not?" Marie asked.

"Difference of opinion which appears to have lead Blair to an incorrect and quite rude assumption about me." Nadia scowled. "I'm still waiting for him to apologize."
