Evie's having a *very* good day. She has a date for the Homecoming Dance. And somehow, she's been nominated for Sophomore court. It's probably a mistake, but still!

To celebrate, she's eating ice cream while doing her 21st Century homework. In a way. Spooky Things isn't a sitcom, but still...

Lyra hadn't guessed she'd been so transparent, and took a gulp of milk to hide her red face.

"I hand't thought baout it, really. I suppose I should go. I've a dress I can wear," she shrugged. "Who are you going with?"

"Zack Addy. He's in my Myths class, and a fellow scientist." Evie blushed a little, but looked hopeful. "I just got a dress on Sunday. And everyone says the Carnival is the best part, maybe we could go to that?"

"That'd be nice; it isn't in Rome, is it?" Lyra asked. The only Carnivale in her world was the one after Lent.

"No, no, it's right here, tomorrow. Candy and games and rides! Oh, it'll be fun. You'll see." Evie looked even more cheerful.

Lyra smiled. Evie's cheerfulness was infectious.

"I'd like that. How 'bout we meet there, so we don't get stuck waiting around for each other?"

"Smashing! I'll see you there. I'll definitely be at the carousel and the food booths at some point." Evie bounced a little. "Oh, this is going to be such fun."

Dean may possibly have been eavesdropping on Lyra and Evie's conversation, which probably wasn't cool, but...well, too bad.

"Hey, Lyra?" he asked with a smile. "You know, I don't have a date for Homecoming either, but I figure I should go since I got nominated for court, so. Would you like to go? With me?" He figured the just-as-friends part was implied, considering she knew he had a girlfriend, and he was pretty sure she'd mentioned a "friend" of her own back home.

Lyra looked over at Dean, surprised; she hadn't thought he was listening. But she smiled, a little gratefully, a little hesitantly.

"Yeah," she said. "That'd be nice. If, uh, your Rory won't mind?"

"Nah, she's fine with it. Lots of people go to school dances with friends, and if I live with you and she's cool, this is nothing, right?" He's genuinely glad she accepted, it should be a fun night.

Lyra grinned. "That's true, I suppose. I'm glad I bought a dress, just in case I decided to go."

She thought a moment. "Is there going to be food there, or should we eat before?"

Dean thought for a minute. "You know, I have no idea. I'd guess there's going to be some kind of food, but not anything like a meal? Maybe I should find out." He knew Layla was on student council, so she'd probably know.
