The Roof: Halloween night

Parker's up on the roof smoking, dressed as ~~Trinity~~ Trio. Leather pants, leather jacket, shades, and prop gun. She didn't want to go trick-or-treating. Or talk to anyone.

She might also be taking pictures. And making phone calls and leaving messages.

She's really, really bored.

"Why?" Jack eyed the balustrade, then Parker, turning to walk backwards so he could see her. "I told him he shouldn't expect the things he'd abandoned to be handed back," he said carefully, then met her eyes. "He said hadn't abandoned anything."

Parker froze, staring at Jack, then rolled her eyes. "And I'm sure he took that well," she muttered, pitching the cigarette off the roof. "And I have to give her back because she's -- because he's hers. She misses him. Even if she's having fun here, she paces in front of the door and waits for him sometimes. And she hides from me and chews my shoes other times." She looked away, and folded her arms. "It's not about what he wants, it's about M. So. She goes back."

"I guess I can see that." He was watching her, a half smile on his face. "Sometmes you amaze me, Parker. You really do."

"Hmmph." Parker shrugged, and pushed the sunglasses up to hide her expression. "Besides I was going broke on tuna and shrimp. Let's see how the Ex handles a thoroughly spoiled cat on his budget."

Smiling now, he moved closer and held out his hand. "You're such a softie sometimes," he told her, voice rich with affection. "Now, will you get down from there before I have some sort of anxiety attack?"

"Bite your tongue." For revenge, Parker took his hand, and tugged on it. "You come up here. Just for a minute. If Angelo can do it, you can."

"Of course I can." Jack looked over the edge, then shrugged. "At least if we die, we die together." And so saying, he stepped up, balancing lightly, bare feet curved around the edges. "There you go," he said smugly, not releasing her hand.

"Yay," Parker said, deadpan. She didn't have a smile in her for Jack, but she managed a lip-quirk that probably indicated... something. She was not looking toward the 4th Sin. "And no dying. I don't get to die until I get all the things I have planned done."

"No, no dying," he said, threading his fingers through hers. "And since I know you'll never stop planning, that means you'll live forever." Jack laughed a little and started to walk very, very carefully backwards, drawing her after him. "I might be waiting a long time for you to join me on our island."

Another small lip-quirk, this one a little more relaxed. "I can go visit in between plots though, can't I? I'll be getting tired by then. At some point I'll just give up and stay. And do it all by modem or sat phone." Parker let herself be drawn after Jack, and said, "Wearing these sunglasses out here is nearly like being blind."

Rolling his eyes, Jack carefully slipped off her glasses, folding them one handed and hooking them into his shirt. "There, problem solved. And you can rule the world by remote control while I serve you fruity drinks and rub your feet." His smile died away completely and he stopped moving. "Because sometimes you've got to let people look after you."

"True." Parker's voice remained matter-of-fact. "But if I let anyone do that now, I'd either have a mental breakdown or kill them. So it's not a good idea at the moment." She paused in her walk on the balustrade, and added, "This is okay, though."

Jack nodded. "Okay. But when you're ready..." He squeezed her hand, then grinned. "And trust you to be okay with holding hands five stories away from a very messy death."

"When else?" Parker raised her eyebrows. "He didn't go off on you again, did he?" No need to specify who he was.

Jack avoided her gaze and resumed walking backwards. "Nooo," he said, then muttered, "kind of the opposite actually," before continuing in a normal tone, "Wouldn't matter anyway. I'm not going to bite at anything he says. Ever."

Parker's fingers tightened on his. "Jaaack. Don't." The warning tone in her voice was completely without humor. "I don't want him to have reason to go after you again. Just-- leave him alone." She swallowed, and looked away, down off the ledge to the darkness and trees below. "It's not like his opinion matters, anyway."

"Yeah, all right," he said reluctantly. "For you, because you asked, I'll leave him alone." Part of Jack was protesting, but if it was that important to Parker, he could do it. "And it really doesn't. Jarod who?" He waved a hand dismissivley and grinned. "I see no Jarod, I know no Jarod."

"Hmmmmmm." Another almost-smile, and a squeeze of the fingers. "Thanks."

They reached the corner, and Parker finally turned toward the roof, and jumped onto it. "So. Turning our attention away from that-- happy Halloween?"

Jack followed her lead, landing next to her. "Thanks. And a happy Halloween to you. It's my first. So far it's going well, even if I abandoned the traditional activities."

"Good. We can do without bobbing for apples or real ghosts, anyway." Parker gave a quick glance over her shoulder toward Jarod's house. "We have enough to worry about."

"No." Jack caught her hand and slipped around to stand in front of her. "No, we don't. I know it's waiting for us, but right now? Right this minute? There's nothing to worry about." He swung her hand, and looked up into the sky. "There's just you and me and the stars and the sky and a gorgeous night."

And that almost, almost gets a smile. "Right. Starlight and a friend. What else could I want?"

"Right now?" he repeated. "Nothing. Nothing at all." He stepped closer, close enough to lean his shoulder against hers. "Look up. Enjoy the stars, enjoy the night. Don't think, just let yourself be, just for a minute. We're just Parker and Jack and we've got each other, and for now that's all that matters."
