The hallways, Monday afternoon

After Pop Culture, Pete roamed the hallways, humming to himself.

Then the humming grew. To mumbled singing.

Soon enough, he was rockin' out in the hallways, playing air-banjo and singing "American Music" by the Violent Femmes at the top of his voice.

"I happen to be singing a wonderful song that I learned about in class, a modern American classic of nearly the same weighty authority and honor as the Stars and Stripes themselves!"

"Ah. Americans. Truly, not the great songwriters of the world. Their national anthem is terrible."

Pete pointed a shaking finger at the cat boy. "You take that back!"

"Or?"

"Or--or--or we'll have to get a little bit physical." Pete glared. "You want a piece'a me, Cat-boy?"

"I dunno. How do you taste?"

"Yer some kinda circus freak, ain'tcha." Pete started to dance back and forth in the hallway, his fists raised by his chin. "Let's go, right here, I'm taking you out!"

Schrodinger shrugged. "Fine. You want the first hit?"

"Hey Pete! How you doing?"

JD came down the hall, his taxidrermied labrador under his arm. He was getting the hang of moving Laddie around, provided it was for short jaunts.

Pete nodded and launched a clumsy left at Schrodinger.

Pete grinned at JD. "Howdy! Who's your friend?"

Schrodinger bounded to the right.

Pesky cat-like reflexes.

Pete went for a right this time.

Schrodinger took it full on the face, flying back into the wall. He bounded up almost immediately, shaking his head. "Man, that was bracing."

Pete stared at him. "What are you, some kind of freak?"

"What, the cat ears didn't give it away?"

Pete's eyes narrowed. "Are you mockin' me?"

"His name's Laddie." He set Laddie down.

"Whatcha singin?"

"A song I learned 'bout in class. Never knew modern music had such . . . pizzaz!"

"I think I am. Or maybe I am and I'm not at the same time."

"The hell are you talkin' about? You either are or you ain't!"
