Gym, Evening

After a long run, Sam went to work on the bag, punching and kicking with a little less than her usual technique. Almost as if she was trying to block out Ethics class or something.

By this point, Jack had no idea how to feel about anything, so he decided to compromise by feeling nothing.

It was in just such a mood that he walked into the gym and stopped dead when he caught sight of Sam. "Did the bag insult your mother?"

"Uh huh. I know." He moved closer, circling around her until he was standing on the other side of the bag - far enough away that it wouldn't hit him. "What's up?"

He watched for a bit before replying. "Did I insult your mother?"

Jack's eyes narrowed, but he kept his voice calm. "No. But obviously I'm the last person you want to have around." He gave one sharp shake of his head and started walking towards the door. "I'll see you later, Sam."

He stopped and turned back. "You too, huh?" he asked, managing a half smile.

No matter how off-balance he felt, Jack couldn't not walk over and rest his hand on Sam's back. "I'm sorry," he said softly. "I got off easy. As soon as I mentioned wanting to run naked through the school, he left me alone."

"I'll give you a sneak preview sometime," he promised, sliding his hand up to rub her neck, feeling some of the tension leave him. This was simple, this was something he could do.

"Yeah, it will." He let his hand fall and rested his shoulder against the bag. "Maybe we could sell tickets?"

Jack looked down at himself, then glanced up at Sam, a smile lurking around the corners of his mouth. "What, you don't think people would buy them?"

"What?" he asked, straightening off the bag. "Sam? Don't what?"

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2006-11-10 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
"Have to," Jack repeated flatly, folding his arms. "You say it like it's some great tragedy. I happen to like putting myself on display." Ignoring the impulse telling him to shut up, right now, he asked, "Do you have a problem with that?"

"I don't." Jack studied Sam carefully, then sighed. "I'm gonna go," he finally said. "Enjoy kicking the crap out of the bag."

Halfway to the door, Jack hesitated and almost went back, but the force with which Sam was pounding the bag convinced him it would be a waste of time. He did very quietly say, "Bye, Sam," before he went out the door, but he had no idea if she'd heard.
